Jerry O'Connell and Kelly Ripa Embarrass Us All with Staged "rave" on Morning Show
But O'Connell and Kelly Ripa created an uncomfortable moment of television when they staged a "rave" with styrofoam snowballs on today's "Live with Regis and Kelly."
Jerry O'Connell is no longer the chubby kid we remember from the classic 1980's films Goonies and Stand By Me. He has grown up and succeeded in some adult acting roles. Given his combination of likeability and maturity, he is not a bad choice for substitute host on "Live with Regis and Kelly" when Regis is away.
Kelly Ripa, for her part, has been hosting Live with Regis and Kelly since February of 2001 (when she replaced Kathie Lee Gifford). Despite the obvious qualifications of Jerry O'Connell and Kelly Ripa to host a talk show, though, something went seriously wrong on this morning's Live with Regis and Kelly. Because of all the recent snowfall in the U.S., the show featured a segment where fake snow and styrofoam balls fell from the ceiling while O'Connell and Ripa had a "rave" (that's the term O'Connell used) behind their desk. For a combination of reasons, the segment was incredibly uncomfortable to watch. But it's worth a watch, and you can see it here:
It is difficult to describe exactly what is wrong with the segment. I think we can all agree that it is embarrassing to watch, and the main problems with it seem to be: (1) the robotic, scripted movements of Ripa and especially of O'Connell, (2) the cheap props, (3) the non-rave-like music and (4) the utter unbelievability of a spontaneous "rave" on a scripted television show. Ultimately, all we can see is that it is a very weird moment in television history.
