The Great Gatsby: Contrasting Tom and Jay
Imagine the 1920's have been reenacted, a time of swinging parties and when things just did not seem to matter as much as they do now. This may not seem as hard as it sounds. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, paints a picture of what the time period was like.
Each of these characters represented exceptionally different ways of life. Jay Gatsby epitomized the time period of the 1920's. He was known for having his very lavish parties on a weekly basis. Gatsby had the money to have these parties and felt that if the resources were there, then why not spend your money. These parties were not only a time to get together with friends and have a good time; it was more of a way to show and prove your social status. In fact, most of the people who attended his parties had no relationship to Gatsby, but just went there to prove their importance to the society at
large. Tom Buchanan lived nearly the complete opposite of Gatsby. He never liked to go out and would never have ever thought to have such a large group of people descend onto his house for such an occasion as a party. If he did have people over, such as the case of when Gatsby and Nick went over to his house, everything would be completely on his watch and would be a very dull time such as sitting around and drinking cocktails. He was not a people person at all and felt that the "white man" should be the only one in power. Thus exemplified by his reading of the novel The Rise of the Colored Empire, which speaks about how the colored race is gaining too much power and needs to be halted right away. It speaks of Tom's character as a white supremacist and how he does not want change at all in society. " The idea is if we don't look out the white race will be- will be utterly submerged" (Fitzgerald13). He feels things should be how they have always been and there is no need for blacks to gain power if they have never had it before.
Tom or Gatsby each do not show much nobility in either of their personalities. But overall, Gatsby is the more noble between the two of them. Gatsby really has never had to make any very difficult decisions in his life because he has been able to let his money be his wall to the real world. But one moment in particular which stands out it the time when he was at Tom's house in the height of his and Daisy's love affair and he stands up to Tom and says how Daisy does not love him. " She never loved you do you hear"(Fitzgerald 131). Even though Daisy does never admit to Tom that she does not, it
still shows some of what is in Gatsby's character that he will stand up for things he really cares about such as Daisy. Tom never shows any sort of nobility over the course of the
novel. He is an ignorant man who does not deal with things like a real man would. He either pushes it to the side or his anger comes out in him such as the time when he broke Myrtle's nose for no real apparent reason. He is just a big brute who tries to intimidate others with his large size in the hope he does not have to show and stature in moral fiber.
The most idealistic of the characters is easily Gatsby. Throughout his entire life, the only real thing he ever felt strongly for was Daisy. All of the money and wealth he portrayed was really just a front to try and attract Daisy to him and away from Tom. Indeed, it was the only thing he had really going in his life. Gatsby had no real friends who cared for him until Nick, and over the course of his life, Daisy was the glue, which held him together. " You're worth the whole damn bunch put together"(Fitzgerald 154). It was the one aspect that made Gatsby's life worth living. It was the longing for her and the parties and material goods, which he had to try and help, draw Daisy towards him. Tom never seemed to have an idealistic thought. He had no real strong bond with his wife Daisy, which explains his affair with Myrtle. And as a person he did not feel strongly towards one thing, which has he motivation to try and be a better person. He was just an angry man who had no real dreams because he did not have to earn a thing in his life.
The amount of wealth and materials that each of these men had was almost unthinkable, but Gatsby again was the more materialistic of the two. One of the most unbelievable expenses Gatsby did was when he paid a driver to move the polo horses to
another area. The amount of money that such an activity would cost and the ease of him ordering such and act is very insane. Also the amount of clothes that Gatsby had, and the manner in which he dressed, was also highfalutin. But, all of his materials and wealth was just a way he felt he could take Daisy and have her forever. Gatsby had the biggest and best of everything but none of this could pay for his happiness. All of these materials were a way Gatsby felt he could make himself and his life more enjoyable to live. Tom also was a very rich man. But he did not seem to need all of the goods and materials, which Gatsby needed. He never earned his money so therefore he did not have a stream of money coming like Gatsby did. But he did not need things to make himself feel better about himself because he was not unstable like Gatsby and if worse came to worse, he had Myrtle his mistress to lay back upon and make himself happy.
The contrast in how each of these men went about their lives was a polar opposite. They each had different ideas with how things should be done and how their lives should be led. Their beliefs were not at all the same because of the differing background that Tom and Gatsby had, which therefore made these men the anti each other. From the beginning to the end, each of these men seemed to but heads on each and everything the two encountered due to their conflicting personalities.
