How to Remove Black Marks on Linoleum Floors
Black marks on linoleum can come from a number of sources, especially the heals of shoes, but in any case it is important to figure out the source to find an effective way to remove black marks on linoleum.
Could the Marks be Creosote Tar from Railroad Ties?
Years ago when I began finding small black marks on my linoleum floors I was dumbfounded. The marks were typically dark specks that smeared but did not come off, even when using a wet soapy rag and floor cleaning solution. Trying to remove the marks only made them worse. They smeared but did not come off.
My gravel driveway was lined with railroad ties, and the railroad ties oozed a black sticky substance. I found out from a railroad worker that this black substance was creosote tar, and it was applied to railroad ties as a preservative. It was very gooey, and almost every time someone entered the house they had stepped on the railroad ties first. The tiny spots of creosote tar oozing out of the cracks adhered to their shoes and ended up on my linoleum floor. This happened more often on summer days when the black creosote tar was hot and bubbled out of the cracks in the railroad ties. I had to find a product to remove it and get rid of the source of the problem once and for all.
Goo Gone is a fantastic product that works to remove almost any type of adhesive or oil-based goo, and it worked to remove the small black spots of creosote tar brought in on shoes. I applied it according to product label instructions, and it was able to remove the spots without much rubbing or scrubbing. Give Goo Gone a try if you suspect the black marks on linoleum are from creosote tar found on old railroad ties. It will work to remove the dark oil-based spots, simply and easily.
A Very Easy Way to Remove Heel Marks
Black heel marks are a common problem on linoleum floors, and many types of shoes have heels that will leave marks on floors. Sometimes they rub off easily, and other times it takes a bit more effort. My daughter's boots with black heels were creating ugly black marks and streaks on the linoleum floors, and I found a simple way to remove them.
If black marks are a common problem on linoleum flooring, use a tennis ball to gently and effectively rub away the streaks. The material surrounding a tennis ball works like an eraser to remove heel scuffs. If you want to remove the streaks without having to bend over and crawl around on hands and knees, attach a tennis ball to a sturdy dowel rod or a stick with a nail attached to the end. The black marks will come right off, if they were made by the heels of shoes.
