Take a Step Back in Time at Schell's
Schell's mini-golf and restaurant has been delighting children of all ages since 1952. It provides old-fashioned fun for the whole family!
Last month, I was traveling to hopefully watch my first Triple Crown in person. As with my other attempt in 2004, this one ended with no Triple Crown. Fortunately, I found a couple of roadside gems on the travel up that made up for the loss of another Triple Crown. I prefer whenever possible to take the back roads, both for the saner pace of getting to point B from point A and for the chance to discover those often forgotten gems of roadside Americana. On the way to Elmont, NY, I found two in Pennsylvania - Crystal Caves and Schell's. We stopped at Crystal Caves on the way up, and I made a promise to stop at Schell's on the return trip. I am so glad that I kept that promise.
Schell's has been in business since 1952, an amazing sixty years this year. Located at 4625 5th Street (Rt 222) in Temple, Pennsylvania, you won't miss it from the road if you are traveling through, as it's right on the main drag. The complex consists of two buildings and a mini-golf course. One building is the dairy house that sells ice-cream and other treats. Being lactose intolerant, I did not visit the dairy house.
The other building is the main restaurant which serves lunch and dinner. Fair is what you would expect at such a place--hot dogs, burgers, fries and other sandwiches. They are none for their cheddar cheese bites - a bit of cheddar cheese inside a crispy batter that is then fried. I tried the cheddar cheese bites and must say they were not for me. The cheese was too tangy for my taste, but I noticed many diners who were locals devouring them. To go with my cheddar cheese bites, I had a cheeseburger and coke. The cheesburger was decent and all of the food is reasonably price though don't be fooled by the wooden sign showing ridiculously cheap eats. That sign shows what the prices were when Schell's opened. The food went perfectly with the atmosphere.
The mini-golf is a steal. Just $6.00 currently for an amazing 27 holes! My travel companions and I were shocked at the number of holes and their complexity and ingenuity. The course is a challenging one, which should keep adults on their toes while the unique features and many water hazards will delight children of all ages. My favorite holes were those that almost guaranteed that the ball would end up in the "drink". It afforded me the opportunity to wield the large metal baskets to fish my ball from wherever it had ended up. On a hot day, the cold water proved a welcome sight. The ball-cleaners also fascinated me, as I had never seen such contraptions before.
There is a little something for everyone at Schell's, providing you are willing to put aside the rush of our modern world and disconnect for an hour or so. I would recommend Schell's for small children through adults to have a good time, enjoy a quick, cheap bite and some forgotten fun. I hope Schell's may last another sixty years and beyond to delight new generations.
