Heart Makes "These Dreams" the Stuff of Memories

High heels, tight pants, and big hair. Heart's 1986-1987 world tour was a show to remember. The author reflects on memories from her first concert.

It was 1986. Like all the other girls in my eighth grade class, I wanted to look just like Molly Ringwald in "The Breakfast Club". Ms. Pacman was my favorite game. "These Dreams" by Heart was my favorite song. Wearing spandex, with big hair and even bigger voices, I was hooked the first time I saw their videos on MTV. Imagine how ecstatic I was when my sister offered me her extra ticket to their world tour concert that spring.

Thanking my lucky stars.

My sister is 5 years older than I am. I'm not sure exactly what events transpired that let me go with her to the concert. She generally viewed me as a pest. And I am sure that I lived up to that expectation effortlessly and often. My mother may have argued in my favor. Moms tend to do that. I do remember going through the list of acceptable behaviors before we all got in the car. Listen to your sister. Don't go off by yourself. Be polite to your sister's friends. And so on. I could barely resist the urge to ignore my mother and just get in the car.

Finally on our way.

We lived in Midland , Michigan . From there it was a 90 minute drive to get to the outdoor venue, Pine Knob Amphitheater, outside of Clarkston, Mi. I don't remember any of the drive. On the outside, I sat calmly trying not to irritate my sister or her friends. But on the inside, my mind was contemplating a thousand questions a minute. What will it be like when we get there? Did I pick the right outfit to wear? Will I meet anyone from the band? Will there be cute boys there? Will I get to go on stage? Finally pulling into the parking lot of the theater was like entering another world. Driving in, we were surrounded by what seemed like a million other cars. I poked my head out of the rolled-down window like a dog, looking everywhere at once to try and take it all in. We could hardly park the car fast enough.

A rare glimpse of stardom.

As we walked toward the venue's entrance, we passed a huge chain-link fence. All of a sudden my sister squealed and grabbed my arm, pointing wildly with her other hand. On the other side of the fence, almost out of view, the band was getting off their tour bus. We screamed and hollered, trying to get their attention. They never turned our way. But, I was in seventh heaven. I had just seen a real live rock star, in person, with my very own eyes. That may be a common sight on the coasts of California . Back in suburban Michigan celebrity sightings were akin to alien abduction, everyone knows someone who knows someone who's seen one, but nobody has seen one for themselves. Seeing the band for the first time, I thought I would faint right then and there.

A few minutes later.

I nearly did faint. The theater was built into the side of a hill, with the stage at the bottom. The parking lot was on the other side of the hill from the stage. Our seats were at the top of the stadium, and off to the left-hand side. We had to climb several flights of stairs to reach them. My sister was wearing a long pencil skirt that was too narrow for her to step from one stair to the next. She had to step out to the side, waddling like a penguin to navigate each step. I don't know which was worse, the stitch in my side from laughing at my sister's struggles or the cramps in my calves from the steep, steady climb. Needless to say, i t took us a long, long time to finally sit down in our seats.

Suddenly, the lights went out.

The crowd went crazy. We went crazy too, yelling and hollering at the tops of our lungs. We clapped. We chanted. The crowd got even louder as the band crept out through the darkness and onto the stage. Music started colored lights and fire flared up in a blinding flash. I was in another world for the next few hours, ensorcelled by the vibrations traveling up through my feet, hypnotized by the dance of light and color.

Swept up in sound.

Heart played all my favorite songs that night; "These Dreams", "Never", "What About Love", "If Looks Could Kill". I also found a few new ones in "Dog and Butterfly", "Dreamboat Annie", and "Barracuda". Nancy Wilson became my new idol, strutting across the stage, electric guitar in hand, whipping her teased blonde mane as she sang. The last song of the night was "Shell Shock". Fire blasted from the stage each time the title words were sung. All the lights went down again, and in the lingering darkness the band slipped one by one from the stage. My ears rang. I was hoarse from screaming. But, at just shy of 14 years old, it was the very best night of my young life.
