Three Things Sabotaging Your Goals
You never really can know someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes, there are some common personality traits that are easily recognizable. One of the most common is our uncanny drive to sabotage our own purposes and goals.
Lacking the Tools
Would you attempt to climb Mount Everest without the proper equipment? Then why do you have lofty fitness goals without owning the right shoes? In order to reach your goals, it is imperative that you put yourself in a position where you can actually succeed. Often this form of sabotage comes from a lack of information; we know we want something but we don't know how to get it. The solution is research. What do you need in order to have the best chance at achieving your goal? If your goals are financial, meet with a financial planner. If your goals are fitness related, meet with a personal trainer. Information is power, so equip yourself with as much as possible.
Accountability
Anybody can set goals, but it takes a particular type of person to hold herself accountable. The most common way we interfere with our ambitions is by being too lenient with ourselves and not holding ourselves accountable for our actions. If you're trying to save money, you have to stop spending. If you want to get in shape, you have to strap on your fitness shoes and get to the gym. We'll never reach our goals if we can't keep ourselves accountable.
Listening To Ourselves
Goals should be personal and should reflect our specific, individual needs. Broad, general goals usually don't have personal implications. Even if we could all stand to lose more weight or to save more money, unless this goal really resonates inside of you, you'll always fall short of achiving it. This may not actually be the year you need to save money, but rather spend money by investing in education or career opportunities that will put you in a better position in the future. Likewise going to the gym may not be the best way to lose weight if there are other factors causing you to overeat-not being happy at work, for example, in which case your goal should be to find a new work environment or change careers. Don't bother yourself with what your goals should be, listen to what you actually want, then set yourself up to achieve it.
