'American Idols' Live! Tour 2020: What to Expect and the Complete Set List
In many cities the 'American Idols Live' shows have not sold out. So should you scoop up a ticket to a show in your town? Here's a recap of the American Idols! Live 2020 show '" and the complete set list.
Opening Act
I caught the AI Live show in Hershey, PA. There was no opening act. In Hershey anyway, the show time was 7:30 and it started promptly at 7:30. And I mean promptly. I was still haggling with the t-shirt lady and had to dash to my seat when I heard the familiar American Idol theme song blasting from the stadium. By the time I ran down the steps, Didi Benami had already started her set.
The Crowd
I wasn't sure what to expect as far as the crowd goes, but in Hershey it was a mix of older people and tweens. There were very few teenagers at the show. That said, it was perfect family fare for families with younger kids (but not too young- I saw a couple of major meltdowns in the audience, because 3 year olds really don't like loud concerts). And in many cases, Grandma and Gramps came along too. I will have to say, at one point I wondered if any of the people in the 10 rows in front of me had a pulse. It was unbelievable how still they all sat. But up by the stage and peppered throughout the audience were enthusiastic, dancing tweens and older fans. And there were plenty of glow sticks glittering in the audience.
The Performances
The show moved along nicely. Because every couple of songs a new performer came on stage, it was never boring. I personally liked most of the singers and a couple of them even performed better than I expected.
Didi Benami started things off. And while she was a wee bit stiff at first, she finished nicely. She quipped that she liked the name of the town Hershey because it reminded her of chocolate. Did she know she was performing in Chocolate Town, USA or did she think the name of the town was just a coincidence?
Next up was Andrew Garcia, who did not disappoint with an encore performance of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up". I liked Andrew all season long, but I can understand his style is not for everyone. He finished up with a favorite Maroon 5 song. It's nice when these performers can sing songs that they want to sing, in their chosen genre (nothing like force-feeding Andrew Garcia a Rat Pack song).
Katie Stevens had the tweens in a tizzy with her energetic renditions of songs by pop stars Demi Lovato and Christina Aguilera.
Tim Urban was very in tune with his audience. He made sure to smile and point at his fans throughout his performance-and he sounded really good live.
I was pleasantly surprised by Aaron Kelly, who leaned toward the country genre, singing songs by Keith Urban and Rascall Flatts. And his confidence on stage was apparent-- something he sometimes lacked when he was competing on American Idol. Of course, Hershey, PA is near Kelly's hometown, so at this show it was his big night and many of the fans were there especially for him.
Siobhan Magnus changed the mood of the show a bit, with her darker performance of the Rolling Stones classic, "Paint it Black". I did notice some of the elderly people in the audience go take a bathroom break at this point.
Casey James was at the top of his game, with excellent guitar playing and vocals. Big Mike Lynche joined Casey on stage to reprise their AI performance of "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman". Lynche also performed "This Woman's Work" during his set (the performance that brought judge Kara DioGuardi to tears last season).
Crystal Bowersox sounded great live, and she had her guitars and harmonica in tow. She nervously chitchatted with some of the audience members and seemed genuinely sweet.
As for the show's main event, American Idol Season 9 winner, Lee DeWyze? Well, winning Idol has been good for him. His confidence level and charisma have grown considerably since we last saw him in May. Going on tour and seeing his fans may have been just what DeWyze needed. Even "Beautiful Day" sounded better this time around.
