Calculating a Budget
The first issue in preparing for retirement is simply planning your budget. The average retiree will need about 70% of their pre-retirement income. Retirement Accounts
It is never too late to start a retirement account. Many employers offer them and many also offer great contribution matches. For example, if your employer offers to match 15% of whatever you put into your account, then you have gained 15% on your account before you have ever even invested. Many employers match much higher percentages.
If your employer does not offer such a plan, then consider an individual retirement account (IRA), which will allow to invest a portion of your income into their retirement plans. The IRA will offer tax benefits to you in the year you invest (through credits) and either in the current (traditional) or the withdrawing year (Roth).

There are, of course, limitations to the reverse mortgage. You must have no other loans or mortgages against the property, be 62 years old, and can receive no amount greater than $625,000, regardless of the actual value of the home.
The biggest issue here for the retiree, of course, is the loss of control in their home's equity. As the bank makes payments over the term of the loan, they absorb that equity and can eventually gain control of the property. 1 year after you cease living in the home the bank may sell it, using the proceeds to pay the loan off, any excess going into your pocket. If you stay in your home until your death then your heirs can refinance the mortgage in order to occupy the home.
The reverse mortgage is increasing in popularity, up an estimated 62% between 2005 and 2020; a trend which will likely continue as an ever-increasing number of the population reach 62.
