The MDGA is Helping to Grow Disc Golf and Promote Healthy Living in South Florida
Here is a look at the latest efforts by the Miami Disc Golf Association in spreading the word of the great sport of disc golf, helping to expand courses and promote healthy living in south Florida communities.
This scenic course features a large lake with rolling hills as well as gorgeous wooded areas making the most of the lovely property its set upon. Disc golfers can enjoy a variety of wildlife including squirrels, birds, foxes, turtles and even "Elmo," the resident crocodile.
The course is designed to be fun and challenging for players of all ages and skill levels. It features multiple tee-pads and basket locations for a variety of game playing experiences, and, as most disc golf courses are, there is no cost to play.
This new disc golf course helps the MDGA continue to fulfill its mission of promoting healthy activities by growing the game of disc golf within south Florida communities. This disc golf course is just the first, as they are also working to build the Key Biscayne Historical Beach Park 9-hole course by mid summer. The baskets are already in place, but the tee pads and signs have not gone up just yet. Players here will be able to enjoy a round right on the beach followed by a dip in the ocean.
These courses last up to 20 years and only require minimal maintenance, while providing family fun and an expensive opportunity for people of all ages to get active and enjoy their community. The MDGA is currently teaching kids who are as young as three years old and seniors in their mid-90s how to play the game. They are also offering classes to the YMCA smmer camps, local schools, disabled groups, ECO tours and the Special Olympics.
Disc golf is a fantastic way to not only get active, but to network as well. During each round players will walk an average of two to three miles while enjoying time with friends and family in Miami's beautiful city and county parks and recreation areas. Unlike regular ball golf, disc golf is quite inexpensive with starter discs available for as little as $10 either online or through the MDGA, and courses are free to play!
Funding for the courses is mostly generated through the MDGA's partnership with Millenium Discs (Dee and John Houck), Innova Discs (the world's largest manufacturer of disc golf equipment), and through various community events.
The MDGA will be hosting several events to raise funds for disc golf courses in south Florida, starting with the Miami Vivo Event on July 12, 19 and 26 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. These events will feature talented local bands, great hospitality and retail vendors with the funds raised going toward both the MDGA and Special Olympics.
