COFFEE: Is it Finally Ok to Drink?
Coffee is one of the most popular drinks and one of the most feared. What's the truth?
It can be hot, slightly warm, lemon, honey, iced cold, peach, raspberry, herbal whatever - I love it all. I don't drink coffee and I doubt I ever will.
But I can appreciate the obsession for coffee. Really.
If I don't have my tea in the morning, I'm cranky. Not as cranky as a coffee drinker maybe, but nonetheless I'm not at my best or feel completely awake without drinking my tea. It's the same way with my coffee drinking friends and family. They tell me they need a java jolt to bring them back to life. It's why Starbucks,Dunkin Donuts and Cosi are wildly popular and practically occupy every square block and then some of most major cities. It's also why there are more varieties of coffee than practically any other drink on the planet, except for tea I guess, and why they can charge so much for it.
So what's the problem? Coffee is plentiful, tasty and serves a purpose by getting everyone in gear each day. What's wrong with that? Well, it could damage your health for one thing, or so they say. Besides talk of over dosing or out and out coffee addiction, it's been blamed on everything from cardiac problems to cancer and more. Healthcare professionals warn us that drinking more than one or two cups a day can contribute to health problems, so moderation is in order.
But wait a minute. Not so fast you say. You've read about the health benefits of coffee, right? Recent studies have shown that coffee may actually protect us from cancer and diabetes. It's bad for us? But yet, it's good for us?
Ok, so if this isn't a big brewing mug full of confusion, I don't know what is.
Newer findings talk about anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant compounds found in coffee, which can ward off cancer, while it's also proven that it speeds waste through and out of the body. All jokes aside, that talk about coffee being harsh on digestion and daily bathroom breaks seems indeed to be true.
Yet on the other side, people with bouts of heartburn or acid reflux (GERD) are strongly cautioned against drinking any coffee at all. Also people with sleep disorders or insomnia should restrict or limit their coffee intake.
Like anything, moderation is in order. Most of us love soft drinks, but too many sodas will increase weight and are bad for our teeth. Coffee, it seems can be looked upon similarly. If you are a relatively healthy individual, coffee consumption in moderation seems fine and just may prove to provide more to your life than just that morning wake-up call.
Is coffee junk or jewel? Just like so many things, coffee seems to lie somewhere in between and all depends on you and how you treat it.
