Also if you turn over a melon and the bottom is yellow it is now ripe and ready to harvest. If you thump a ripe watermelon it will produce a hollow sound that is hard to describe, it is now ready to harvest.
The best way to pick your watermelon is to use a sharp, sturdy scissors or sharp knife. It is better to measure about two inches up the stem from the point where it is connected to the watermelon and then cut leaving those two inches on the melon. This will make cutting a little easier and the watermelon will stay in one piece.
