Learning About Growing Watermelons

Learning about growing watermelons is not hard at all; the melons usually do all the work. Children enjoy watching a "golf ball" turn into a huge delicious watermelon they can enjoy.

Some gardeners do not want to grow watermelon because they take up too much space in their garden or that they are a difficult plant to grow. They are not difficult to grow and yes, they can take up a lot of room due to their vines if you let them. As your watermelon matures each week you can train the plants to a smaller area by take the vines and gathering them back onto their original plot in order to form a mounded maze that looks like a nest.

Watermelons are amazing for children to watch grow; they somehow become fascinated by a small golf ball that turns into a large watermelon. When you grow your own watermelon patch the best part is realizing you can choose whatever variety you want and not just the ones the grocery store carries. You can harvest melons that are round, oval, or long and produce the varieties that have flesh ranging from yellow to crimson red.

Learning where to plant watermelon is very easy; they like to be in the hottest and sunniest part of your garden. The soil needs to be enriched with some organic material or compost and you should add a dose of vegetable fertilizer. The seeds need to be planted outdoors about an inch deep in rounded plots; you should plant at least 8 seeds in each plot with a 4 inch spacing between each. You need to allocate about 6 feet between each plots center. When each plot produces seedlings that are 2 inches tall you want to thin them out saving three of the strongest plants. Placing black plastic mulch under the watermelon vines will help keep the melon clean and can improve the yield.

As with any vegetable garden you want to keep the watermelon plants as free as possible from weeds. It is best to pull out the weeds by hand so you do not disturb the roots or cut off any plant shoots accidently. Watermelons do need watering regularly but if your weather conditions get very hot you will probably need to give them extra.

How long does it take for watermelon to mature for harvesting? Growing watermelons from the beginning to the end will usually take about 120 days or roughly 4 months. Next question, how do you know when to harvest the watermelon? You may notice that those tiny tendrils that formed have started to get crispy and turn brown, the color of the melon is beginning to look dull, and the skin of the melon becomes resistant to a penetration of your fingernail, it is now time to harvest. Also if you turn over a melon and the bottom is yellow it is now ripe and ready to harvest. If you thump a ripe watermelon it will produce a hollow sound that is hard to describe, it is now ready to harvest.

The best way to pick your watermelon is to use a sharp, sturdy scissors or sharp knife. It is better to measure about two inches up the stem from the point where it is connected to the watermelon and then cut leaving those two inches on the melon. This will make cutting a little easier and the watermelon will stay in one piece.
