My father knew he had a possible cataract problem. Getting him to the doctor was another story. The tiny fragments are vacuumed out and your old lens is replaced by new one made of soft acrylic or silicone. The lens is literally folded over like a taco and inserted through the incision. PHACOEMULSIFICATION has been successful in 95% of the cases, and experts say that the entire procedure can be wrapped up in less than a half hour.

Obviously a person suffering from cataracts wants to rectify the problem as soon as possible. You never want to prolong anything that interferes with good vision. Getting back to my father - he had cataracts in both eyes and was able to get both eyes corrected on the same day. Individuals who suffer from diabetes or glaucoma will want to see their doctor as soon as initial cataract symptoms present themselves.

According to www.medem.com, PHACOEMULSIFICATION is replacing an older form of surgery called EXTRACAPSULAR surgery in which the entire lens of the eye is removed in one piece. This form of surgery required a larger incision and a much longer recovery time.
