The Pros and Cons of Keeping Old Forms of Media
Just because those video and cassette tapes seem obsolete doesn't necessarily mean you should throw them away.
Pro: There are still ways to play old media formats.
Record players have come back in style over the last few years and can be purchased at the same stores where iPod docks and digital radios can be purchased. Older cars and trucks still have cassette players in them, and may not have the right technology to sync up with a MP3 player. Some companies offer DVD players that also play VHS tapes. So there are still ways to play old media formats, even if most technology has moved on. That makes it worthwhile to keep some items around.
Con: Old media formats take up a lot of space.
While vinyl records are relatively thin, they still need to be kept in proper cabinets or shelves. VHS tapes are blocky and tall and can take up quite a bit of shelf space. Cassette tapes are small but the cases are easily broken if not stored properly. Digital media takes up almost no space at all compared to these older formats. It can be located on a tiny flash drive, or kept on a computer or gaming console hard drive. When it comes time to move or buy new items, digital media is much easier to deal with than old formats.
Pro: Some titles are not available on newer media.
Little known B-grade movies, rare anime, and independently produced records may never be released in digital or high definition, so the only way to have a copy is to keep it on old media. Some popular movies have been re-edited in Director's Cuts or similar since their initial release, and the only way to watch the original version is also on old media. There were also collectible editions of movies and music done for the original media format, that might not be available in newer releases of the material.
Con: Old media does not last the way new media does.
Video tapes and cassette tapes can become worn out or their casing can be broken. Vinyl records can also wear out, and become scratched just as a CD might. Unfortunately older media formats do not stand up to the test of time. Digital media files may become corrupted, but can easily be replaced with a new version. Once the tape from a VHS is ripped, scratched, or otherwise altered, it won't ever play the same way again. And older media is much harder to replace in the same format you originally had it in, because it is no longer available new for sale.
