Ryding High: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2020
This is a review of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2020 game. Contrary to South Park's beliefs, this is not a fighting game and is in fact, an exquisite golf game for gamers of all kinds.
The Gist
This game does not move the franchise very far beyond the previous editions of years past. There is little change in gameplay, though how much there is to improve upon can be debated. The addition of team-based Ryder Cup Play and Focus Mode make the game more fun and Ryder Cup Mode is especially cool online, but I'm not sure if it's enough to convince users to upgrade.
The Good
Ryding High
EA is calling the team play in Tigers Woods PGA Tour 11 innovative and exciting for good reason. It's a great way to connect with friends and the nationalistic matches create a fun environment to play in. Though you still rely mainly on individual play, the AI is quite excellent and provides good competition. Online play is where Ryder Cup mode excels, allowing you to play with up to 23 other people!
Focus, young one
This game introduces "Focus" which is basically golf's turbo button. Whenever you need an advantage or have a crucial shot, you can deplete your meter and give yourself a boost, whether it be driving distance or accuracy. This meter replenishes when you hit a shot with only raw skills. It is fun, but not very realistic.
Excellent New Courses
For the true hardcores, "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11" introduces five new courses to the franchise, including Celtic Manor (the super-difficult and posh course in Wales) and TPC Scottsdale (an Arizona course that has legendary bunkers and tremendous mountain views). The look and feel of these new courses is absolutely perfect, and the little details (like the types of crowds that show up to TPC Scottsdale) are spot-on.
The Bad
Going the Distance
The "Tiger Woods PGA Tour" Mode has always been laborious and challenging to complete. It is even difficult to make it to the tour itself without endless hours of play, and this version makes it no easier. Rather than developing the skills the game wants, you can develop any skills you like, leaving players unbalanced and unfit for competition. It just takes a LONG time.
Slow Play
Yes, golf is a slow game, but does that really have to replicated in the video game. Being forced to watch opponents play (CPU), a lack of control over game play speed, and other annoyances make the game long and difficult to sit through, especially in multiplayer mode.
It's Windy Out Here
This game's new wind physics mean realistic wind patterns, which can be fun on a hot day, but annoying in a round on Pebble Beach. Random bursts of wind dramatically affect your shot and make it difficult for anyone but a pro.
ConclusionThis game caters to hardcore fans and gamers, but this edition seems slightly more tailored toward the regular gamer. The increased team competition allows swarms of people to take part. The focus meter, new courses, and mini games all make this a very fun game for hardcore and casual gamers alike. Though I find the game terrible on Wii, the graphics are stunning on Xbox360 hooked up to 1080i and even better on the PS3 hooked up similarly. Overall I give this game a B+ for its real game play, feel, and stunning courses.
