October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month

Rett Syndrome is a handicap disorder that happens only to girls. I It shows up around 6-18 months of age. Most girls can not walk, talk, or feed themselves.

So what is Rett Syndrome? Rett Syndrome is a disorder that only effects girls. It shows up around the time of age of 6- 18 months old. So that means a child is usually born healthy, happy and just like a regular child. Around 6- 18 months, the child changes, they act "rag doll" which is a term mothers use when trying to explain this to someone. One day the child is healthy, holding head up, eating, etc and the next morning you get up and your baby is just laying their helpless. The child looses motor skills, hand use and their heads are slowing of the normal rate of head growth. There may be a period of isolation or withdrawal when she is irritable and cries inconsolably. Over time, motor problems may increase, while interaction and communication, especially with eye gaze, seizures, and irregular breathing may improve.

So what is it like living with a Rett Child. Well I can tell you. Living with a Rett child, or as we like to call them Slient Angles, is wonderful. While my sister can walk, talk, and feed herself, other Rett Children might not be able to do that. I have had the oppurtunity of knowing a child that is in a wheel chair and can't do anything for herself also. These girls are just so loving and caring. I think they give you hope, dreams, and teach you how to love people more than anyone you know. My sister has taught me how to have more patience with others, love, and a caring heart. Growning up I have learned that you have to be strong, know how to forgive, and let others know all you can about this disorder.
