First Look: Garmin Approach G5 GPS Enabled Golf Hand Held Aid
When it comes to GPS, Garmin is a name everyone knows. The Garmin Approach G5 has the potential to be an extremely handy little helper.
The Tech Specs
A quick look at the specifications, thanks to Garmin.com, reveals some interesting information. The three inch diagonal display is big enough to give an adequate look at the layout of the hole you are currently playing, and with 13,000 courses preloaded into the device that is a lot of information. The number of courses is unlimited which is handy for those golf outings or trips. The entire device is waterproof, which comes in handy for, umm, rainy days (though the folks at Garmin must have watched me play). The touch screen is bright and vibrant, which means you will not have to sit in the shade of the cart to use the Approach G5, which will in turn give you more accurate information.
Features
The touch screen allows the user to drag the flag to the precise location on the green, which is a very cool feature for exact yardage. It also allows for users to touch any part of the course for the distance measurement to that spot. That means knowing where that stupid tree is, and how far you need to be to miss that sand trap. Oh, and the Garmin Approach G5 is compliant with USGA and R A; rules, so it is completely legal to the rules of golf, though it gives the user a distinct advantage. Another cool feature of the G5 is that it doubles as an electronic scorecard for a foursome, allowing the recording and analysis of scores along the way. It can also track your personal stats and help you analyze your performance or lack thereof.
The Downside
First of all, no batteries are included. So after plunking down almost $450 for the device from places like Garmin.com, you will need to toss in another twenty or so for some great lithium batteries, which is a total drag. Yes, the course preview is nice, and hole by hole preview is also nice to have, theGolf Logix app does the majority of this stuff already without the $450 price tag. While the Garmin Approach G5 offers some in-depth stuff and will likely really try to go farther than the much lower priced application. As of right now, it is hard to say if smartphone owners would need to purchase this unit. Some serious hands on time is required before that decision can be made on whether this is an extremely cutting edge device that will help out tremendously or just another piece of gear that sits by the golf bag.
