The New Art of Living
This pseudo art is the art of living your life in the public eye; where composition, colors and visual metaphors are replaced by living outlandishly.
The first one to pioneer this trend was Andy Warhol; while his visual work is important to art history it took the back seat while his personality was in the front seat, driving into stardom.Many would say that Warhol's celeb status and lifestyle was a social commentary (alongside his philosophy and art). In reading "THE Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and back Again)" I realized that the book wasn't filled with much sound philosophy and was filled with shallow and materialistic stories and experiences. I believe he was a was a moving, breathing social commentary; where his shallow recollections mocked society's current state of affairs. You could say that this is a pretentious interpretation of the Pop Art Master, or that I'm reading too far into Warhol and that his art is what it is; to me that is counter intuitive. Warhol deserves reading into, speculation and interpretation.
I attribute this new art form to society's fascination and yearning for popularity and glamour; one could say that instead of living their own lives fans can watch a celebrities living the life they want to lead. This phenomenon has been accelerated by new communicative technologies expecially the Internet. Myspace has added a new dimension to this new art form; One advertises oneself and receives a fan base for doing nothing but looking good and selling yourself as an interesting person; or in short being a "MySpace Whore." Go on to MySpace right now and see how many people make their MySpace names into a type of brand name and create banners to advertise themselves as people. The most successful MySpace Whore award goes by Tila Tequila, who has launched herself into international stardom under the guise of being a musician (if what she creates can even be called music.) As Tila has demonstrated by producing clothing and other novelties, a faux celebrity can successfully market themselves. The pseudo pop icons will often dabble in some artistic medium (music in the case of Mrs. Tequila) to give a reason to further increase their celebrity status. Needless to say their tangible art form rarely has substance or artistic credibility.
In contrast, people including the aforementioned Dash Snow and Cobra Snake, do have a good amount of artistic integrity. However their art focuses mainly on their chaotic lifestyle; featuring polaroids of coke binges, sex, lawbreaking and other sensational activities; a creative way of documenting their chaotic life style.
Most would say this is a strange phenomenon; some even would say it is shallow and pathetic. While this new medium is often used for nothing more than an ego boost, it could have artistic integrity and much power in congruence with a tangible art form.
