Philosophy of Golf
This paper is based on two important elements of golf: (1) patience (2) skill, and four different types of golfers.
Type P~S Golfer: The P~S golfer that has patience, but has no skills.
Type ~PS Golfer: The ~PS golfer that has no patience, but does have skills.
Type PS Golfer: The PS Golfer that has both patience and skills.
Type ~P~S Golfer: The ~P~S Golfer that has neither patience nor skills.
Please keep in mind that anyone who is a ~P~S should not be on the golf course in the first place. They are a hindrance to the game as well as the golfers who belong in the previous three types. Since ~P~S does not bring forth any good golfing values, I will neglect this type, and elaborate on the other types.
The Type P~S Golfer is one who most golfers would like to have in their foursomes. This type of golfer is optimistic. He smiles during his practice swing. He smiles throughout his actual swing. Even if he misses the ball, he still smiles. However, the smiling becomes too much for the other golfers in the group. P~S's unorthodox long and short games causes the group downtime in the process. As a result, the following foursomes become frustrated because they have to wait longer. This waiting period is something I would like to call the P~S wait state. This state not only applies to the foursomes behind, but also to the foursome who has the P~S golfer. After the round is over, the other three golfers in the foursome tell P~S that as long as he is a caddie, he can still walk the golf course.
The Type ~PS Golfer is one who most golfers would not like to have in their foursomes unless ~PS is playing for a team scramble event. In general, ~PS and P~S do not get along too well because of their diametrically opposed attitudes. The former smiles all the time while the latter gets angry all the time. ~PS usually has the best of the best golf equipment as well as a good swing to go with it. Beware that ~PS may lose his temper on the golf course. He gets embarrassed if he hits a poor drive into the woods or into the water, duffs a shot with a mid-iron, or even missing a three foot putt. ~PS can perform unusual sorts of behavior such as throwing a club farther than he had hit the ball, digging his spikes into the green or excessive cursing. After the round is over, the other three golfers may comment on his head saying that it is bright as a two hundred and fifty watt light bulb.
The Type PS Golfer is the ideal golfer that everyone loves to see on the golf course. This type of golfer would excel on the PGA Tour because he is photogenic on the camera, and possesses a superb swing. There is one golfer that comes to mind when I think of PS. Tom Watson is someone I would classify as a type PS Golfer. When did you ever see Watson become mad or angry when he hits terrible shots? The answer is never. People would give up their best driver or even their whole set of clubs to become a PS Golfer. To have both patience and skill on the golf course is like a dream come true. The dream come true to golfers is making that big paycheck on Sunday. It is a golfing utopia that most golfers strive to achieve. Unfortunately, most are not born type PS because they lack some of P or some of S. Thus, the previous two types go on with their golfing lives, standing on the green with envy.
