Blacks on Broadway. Missing in Audiences
With the uprising of African American's involvement in the show biz, why aren't the numbers of African American supporters not increasing? The balls in our court but no one is moving.
According to the Broadway League audiences have become a bit more diverse as of the past decade. The definition of diverse not being clarified by the representative. Which lead me to do a bit research of my own. Although the Broadway League stated ticket buyers have broadly ranged from race to race 75 percent of Broadway theatergoers are indeed still very much white. However in the season of 2020-2020 when shows like Tennessee Williams Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and In the Heights were on tour a higher number of minorities made up the ticket buyers. This of course was expected due to these plays attempting to make an outreach by having more diverse casts with Latinos, Blacks, and Asians. Even still, less that 3 percent of the 12.15 million tickets were sold to those of the black race.
Getting to be part of a Broadway show is a struggle. Being black and a part of Broadway is even more strenuous. Bill T. Jones, writer, director, and choreographer, can surely tell of a struggle to become well known on Broadway. Even with great reviews his show Fela! , a musical about the life of the musician and Nigerian activist, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, is struggling to fill theatre seats--with those that actually know of Fela and Nigerian history. Instead the seats are full of whites who seem to enjoy watching the actors sing and prance across the stage.
Finally we have been acknowledged in a category that was at one point and time withheld from us. Producers have casted shows and writers have written to attract blacks and yet have we taken hold of this marvelous blessing. Personally I have always had a love for theatre and have always been active in seeing shows no matter what color the cast was. But lets be honest...like every other group of people, blacks want to see themselves on stage. That isn't meant to be literal as much as I mean that we want to see someone portray our lives accurately. We have the chance to see ourselves shine but we choose not to attend a play ,whether predominantly black casted or not, because it doesn't give "street cred". The arts are not to be seen as an exclusive domain for wealthy white folks.
Another thing we need to work on is the advertising for these events. Our radio stations only buy ads that feed the interest of lower classes, like cars, financial loans, television shows, sneakers, clubs, and etc. Seems as if they want to keep us ignorant to more cultural events like operas, plays, ballets, and symphonies. In a sense it could easily be said that we are restricting ourselves.
