Stevie Speaks! Tiger's Stalwart Caddie Breaks His Silence
Tiger Woods caddie Steve Williams says he's mad but standing with his friend as other friends and sponsors leap off the Tiger, Inc. bandwagon.
"It's been the most difficult time of my life, no two ways about it, because every single person believed that I should know or did know or had something to do with it," Williams said. "I knew nothing, that's my answer. I don't have to extend or clarify that answer. I knew nothing." Williams further elaborated that he would have blown the whistle had he known what was happening.
The relationship between player and caddie is sacred in the professional golf world. It bears a unique intimacy that is part marriage, part Yoda and seeker, with heavy lifting added. That very closeness is what has convinced many that Williams had to have been co-conspirator with Tiger in the affairs and cover-ups. He concedes, "You try to deal with it the best you can but in some people's perception I'm involved in it, I've committed a crime, I've done wrong, or whatever it may be." Williams maintains he stood for Tiger's family, saying, "I'm close with his wife, and he's got two lovely children, and he's let them down." One only needs to replay the confession video to see that friends are jumping Tiger's ship nearly as quickly as sponsors like Gatorade, and the bagfuls of dough in the storehouse for Tiger and his best mate are surely in need of replenishment by now, but Stevie insists his allegiance to Tiger is deeper than his paycheck. "When you're a friend of somebody, that's when somebody needs your support and needs you the most. That's when you don't walk away. Tiger's one of my closest friends and he needs my support right now and I'd never think of walking away." Whatever the motivation, words like that are priceless far beyond what money can buy for Tiger right now. These guys stood up for each other at their weddings, went on skydiving trips, and now, maybe they can pull one another up from the mire. "When I talk to him, I don't talk about what's happened," Williams details. "I talk to him about the future and about what were going to try to accomplish and how were going to get over it. So, I think life is a case of are you going to try to advance for your mistakes and be a better person and let's hope we can do that."
Only time will tell if Woods and Williams can pull a recovery off, but if they manage to do it, it will be a greater win than represented by any trophy on either one's shelves.
