ESL Super Tips: No Prep Lesson Warmers/Coolers: Part Two
Coolers or Recaps: There’s always the chance of having a few extra minutes at the end of the lesson, and there’s nothing worse than a teacher saying ‘so, guys, what should we do now?’ Here are a few lesson closing ideas.
Lesson Recap: All levels. Adaptable to most lessons, the simplest method is to elicit the vocab/grammar forms to put up on the board. You can make it more creative by pointing or throwing a rolled up piece of paper from student to student.
Students say vocabulary by association (bed/tired/night) or specific (shoes/coat/hat, for a lesson on clothes). It wakes them up and reinforces what they've just learned. With a grammar lesson, you can use this method for a drill. 'He is/she is/are you?' for elementary levels, for example.
They point to, or toss a piece of paper to another student. For more advanced levels 'What would you do if…?' and they point or throw to another student to finish the sentence.
Silent Markers: It's a good vocabulary challenge of what they remember from the lesson. Hand a student a marker, have them write a word on the board they remember from the class.
They then pass it to another student, etc. You can make it more lively if you split the class in two and the 'teams' race each other to write what they remember in a fixed time (1-2 minutes).
Musical Chairs: Excellent for a grammar recap, the idea is the same as musical chairs but they practice structures. In a circle, with one less chair, a student stands in the middle and says 'Everyone who has glasses, change seats.'
The students with glasses have to swap seats, while the student who asked the question tries to sit in one of their free chairs. This can be used with multiple structures: 'Everyone who has had a pet (Present Perfect),' 'Everyone that has to wake up at 5 (Modals of Obligation)' and 'Everyone who is going on holiday in June (futures),' to name a few.
Teachers, the point is this: don't panic if you don't have your usual tree-stack of materials to hand out. Don't be afraid to mix it up. It keeps both you and your students on your multiple toes.
