Daylight Savings Time: Who Benefits?

Is Daylight Savings Time worth having? Is it any real benefit for anyone but golfers?

Since then I have moved out to the country. Being a curious person, I asked a farmer or two how Daylight Savings Time had benefited them. I was told that it made no difference to them, they worked from dawn to dusk anyway, and sometimes it was a nuisance when they needed to go to town for supplies or parts. If they had a job in town as well as farming, Daylight Savings Time meant that they had to get up well before dawn to get their chores done before going to work. A cow that needs to be fed or milked cannot read a clock. Pigs cannot read a clock. Ground that needs to be plowed cannot either. Farmers have to take advantage of the weather, and hay rotting in the field waits for no one.

We have also been told that Daylight Savings Time saves energy. When I have to get up and turn lights on before I go to work, it makes me wonder. Do the power companies have any figures to actually show that it saves energy?

There has been some concern lately over safety issues and Daylight Savings Time. As a professional route driver, when I am driving into the sunrise (which is blinding) I know that it does nothing for public safety. When Daylight Savings Time gives me two periods (of about a month) of driving into the blinding sunrise in the spring and in the fall instead of one, I wonder if the disturbance in my sleep is worth it.

There are also some safety issues concerning children. When they have to wait at a school bus stop in the dark, or walk to school in the dark, are they really as safe as they can be?

The only people that I can think of who actually benefit from Daylight Savings Time are those who want to play outdoors after work, such as golfers. Is it worth the sacrifice of our sleep for them to be able to play golf after work? Is the sacrifice of public safety worth someone having extra time to play? Is the sacrifice of our children worth another round for some golfer?

Think about it. Who benefits?
