Oklahoma State Golf Tradition on the PGA Tour
The PGA tour has many golfer from Oklahoma State University. What draws all these great players to Stillwater? One word explains it: Tradition.
COMMENTARY |Hunter Mahan, Rickie Fowler, Bo Van Pelt, Charles Howell III, Scott Verplank, Casey Wittenburg . What do all of these PGA golfers have in common? The answer lies in the small Oklahoma town of Stillwater. Oklahoma State University has one of the most prestigious golf programs in the country. So what makes all of these golfers pack up and head to Oklahoma for the last of their amateur golf days? The answer lies just down the road at Karsten Creek.
Karsten Creek was envisioned by former Oklahoma State golf coach Mike Holder to be a sanctuary for college golf. In 1994 with fundraising secured, golf course designer Tom Fazio was brought in to design the finest college golf course in the country. The course immediately won Golf Digest's best New Public Course for 1994 . Karsten Creek covers over 7,400 yards with SR1020 bent-grass greens and zoysia fairways. All of the holes were carved from the native oak trees surrounding Lake Louise according to the Oklahoma State golf website.
Little did anyone know what would happen next, as the OSU golf program would go on to one of the most dominant runs in college sports history. Over the last nineteen years Oklahoma State has two team national championships, two individual champions in Charles Howell III and Jonathon Moore, and over 35 All-Americans. Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan, and Charles Howell all went on to win the prestigious Ben Hogan award. Mahan also was awarded with the Fred Haskins and Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year honors. While accomplishments in amateur golf are notable it is not until OSU golfers made their way to the PGA tour that they really began to shine. For example:
Rickie Fowler
2 Professional Wins
2020 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year
Over $9 million in career earnings
Hunter Mahan
8 Professional Wins
2003 Haskins Award
Over $24 million in career earnings
Bo Van Pelt
4 Professional Wins
Tied for 8th 2020 Master's Tournament
Over $19 million in career earnings
*Stats according to Yahoo! Sports
These players success on the course, along with their fashion style has led to OSU golfers becoming fan favorites across the country. It is hard to miss Rickie Fowler on a Sunday as he still represents his college home by wearing his all orange attire. Many golf fans may remember his great finishes in the 2020 major tournaments. Mahan and Fowler are also popular for their YouTube success. Along with Ben Crane and Bubba Watson the so-called "Golf boys" have two music videos that donate all proceeds to the clean water initiative. You can check out the videos here.
The amazing thing about all of the players to come through OSU through the years is their allegiance to the program. Just ask any of them and they will tell you that their years at Oklahoma State were the most important years of their golf development. Being surrounded by such tradition and success it was something that Fowler admitted was a major factor in coming to Oklahoma State. In an interview he claimed "that the tradition at Oklahoma State is hard to put into words unless you are apart of the program". Mahan, Van Pelt, and Howell III all share his sentiments. They attribute their success to the early days of golf back when they would play Karsten Creek numerous times a week. Each day the course providing new challenges than the day before. I for one, wonder what would have come of the PGA tour without Oklahoma State. Mike Holder's vision for a revolutionary golf facility changed the course of golf history. Without this legendary course and its history, golf would never be where it is today.
T.S. Vann is an avid golf fan and player. Being from Oklahoma he has followed Oklahoma State and its golfers for over 15 years. He continues to enjoy their extended presence on the PGA tour.
