Women's Self-Defense with Poles and Sticks
A pole can be used in self defense to fight off an attacker -- but only if used correctly. A pole can be a broomstick, tree branch, golf club, yardstick, wooden pole or anything of a stick or rod-like nature.
I was inspired to write this after witnessing a bear attack caught on tape, for the TV show, "Untamed and Uncut." A woman stood within several feet of a polar bear's cage to take a picture. The bear stuck a paw through the eight-inch metal grates and pulled her in, then clamped its jaw on her thigh. After that point, the scene was caught on tape, and I was alarmed at the way two men repeatedly swatted at the bear with flimsy tree branches. They looked like idiots.
They were using the tree branches like a fly swatter. Not only that, but they were striking the bear with the leafy ends -- the end that branches off into many tiny thin branches full of leaves! Need I say that all that haphazard fly swatting didn't affect the bear as it held onto the woman's leg?
A third man had her hand and it was tug of war. The bear wouldn't release her. The two men continued to swat with the tree branches in a downward pattern, like you would with a fly swatter upon spotting a fly on your kitchen counter.
The scene persisted for about 15 minutes, so the men had plenty of time to realize, Hey, maybe this fly swatting technique isn't working; time to try something else !!
The men should have held the tree branches at the other end, so that the thicker, sturdier end would strike the bear, rather than the fluttery, leafy end. Next, the men should have RAMMED the branches into the bear, in a horizontal fashion, like a battering ram.
In self defense lingo, this is called thrusting. You THRUST the rod-like instrument, be it the thick end of a tree branch, broomstick or golf club. Think of a fencer in a dual; he lunges and rams the instrument at his opponent. The men were close enough to ram the bear.
Interestingly, a few times, one of the men actually thought to do this. He rammed the branch into the bear, and this caused the bear to flinch. But the man did this only once or twice, so it wasn't effective. I was waiting to see the men RAM the thicker end of the tree branches into the bear's EYES. I'm sure this would have stunned the bear and caused it to release the woman. It also takes less energy to ram than swat.
Remember, this was not a split-second decision-making process; the men had plenty of time to think. Further, no thinking is necessary if you know how to fight with a rod-like tool. It should be automatic: thrust it or RAM it at the assailant.
The bear was completely unfazed by the repeated, sloppy swatting. According to bystanders, the bear finally took a yawn, and that's when the woman was pulled to safety.
My parents have a baseball bat near their door. I have demonstrated with the bat: Do not swing at an intruder like he's a baseball. You RAM him. Lunge at him, the top of the bat facing him, and drive it horizontally into his sternum or face. If you instead swing, the intruder is likely to see this coming and put up a block or duck.
Thrusting the instrument as quickly as possible will not give the assailant time to react. I know this from firsthand experience when I studied a martial art called Bong Sool. The tool of self defense is a six-foot-long wooden pole. In Bong Sool sparring, nobody swings the pole. It would be ridiculous. You could see it coming a mile away. Instead, you lunge-ram the pole into the person. This is the only way to score points by making contact.
In sparring, the tips of the pole are padded, and the participants are padded and wear face masks, so nobody gets hurt. There are other ways to effectively fight with a pole-like instrument, but for now, I'll leave it with just the simple action of thrusting or ramming the device horizontally at your target.
