New Smyrna was originally settled in 1768, during the British occupation of Florida. Dr. Andrew Turnbull led a colony of 1,500 Greeks, Minorcans, and other people from the Mediterranean Sea area to settle here. New Smyrna was incorporated as a town in 1887. New Smyrna and Coronado Beach consolidated in 1947 to form the City of New Smyrna Beach.

The sport of Golf first came to New Smyrna in 1948, when noted golf course architect Donald Ross designed the New Smyrna Golf Course, an affordable municipal course which opened in 1953. Bobby Weed redesigned the course in 2020. The course is lined with live oaks, palm and pine trees, and some small ponds. You will occasionally see squirrels, snowy egrets, blue herons, osprey, and red tail hawks around the landscape. The 18-hole course offers a total 6,450 yards with a par 72, with four sets of golf tees for different skill levels. The course is rated 70.2 with a slope of 117. A 30-tee driving range is available for practice. No spikes are allowed, and EZ-Go electric golf carts are available for daily rental. A clubhouse and snack bar - restaurant are onsite as well. Gary Wintz is the onsite Golf Pro and General Manager, while John Yancey is the Course Superintendent. Golf Link users have rated the course at four stars (out of five) overall.

Hidden Lakes Golf Club was originally designed in 1974 by Bobby Weed as part of the Fairgreen real estate community. The course was redesigned by Lloyd Clifton in 1995 and is open to the public. A mix of pine and palm trees with some small lakes around the greens creates a scenic golf experience. The 18-hole course offers 5,400 yards total for a par of 68, with three sets of golf tees. The course is rated 63.5 with a slope of 101. A 20-tee driving range and a putting green is available for practice. Metal spikes are allowed at Hidden Lakes, and EZ-Go electric golf carts are available for rental. The facility also has a pro shop, rental clubs, snack bar, and restaurant. Lee Griffith is the General Manager, Robert Schwab is Director of Golf, Kathy Griffith is Golf Instructor, and Glen Bush is Course Superintendent at Hidden Lakes. Turnbull Bay Golf Club was designed by Gary Wintz as part of the Turnbull Bay real estate community, which opened in 1995. The scenic course is surrounded by lakes, hammock oaks, palmettos, and Florida pine trees. Wild azaleas and ferns also surround the course for decoration. This 18-hole regulation course features 6,429 yards total for a par of 72, with four sets of golf tees for different skill levels. The course is rated 71.6 with a slope of 129. A 40-tee driving range is available for practice and golf carts are available for rental. One can also find a Pro Shop. Sharon Gilmore is the General Manager, as well as the on site LPGA Professional. Scott Cassidy is the PGA Golf Professional, while Jason Gross is the Course Superintendent at Turnbull Bay.
