2020 PGA Championship Tournament Returns to Hazeltine
Here is an overall view of the 91st PGA Championship Tournament to be held August 10-16 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.
The PGA Championship is thought by many to be the least of the four majors. Everyone knows the history and majesty of the Masters and the importance of the U.S. Open and The Open Championship. The PGA comes along last in line but nevertheless has a great history. According to pga.com/pgachampionship the tournament's first year was 1916. A department store magnate with the last name of, surprisingly enough, Wanamaker, donated the trophy and the prize money and the event was off and running. It has been contested every year since then with the exception of some interruptions during each World War.
One interesting fact is that the PGA Championship was originally contested by match play. It only changed over to stroke play in 1958. As anyone who follows golf knows, match play is a completely different type of tournament. At match play a golfer can play a great round and lose and also play a rather ordinary round and win. Perhaps that is why the tournament was switched over but prior to 1958 it did provide a different type of major.
An examination of the past winners is a list of the greats of golf. Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus each won five championships and are tied for the most wins. Like everything else in golf Tiger Woods is closing in on the record. In fact, Tiger has won four championships so he has the opportunity this year to tie for the record. Since Tiger has not won a major in 2020 it would not be a shock to see him win. As well as he plays you should expect him to win at least one major per year.
This year marks the 91st Championship. When a great golf course, a great field and an opportunity for Tiger Woods to win his record tying 5th PGA Championship and 15th major there will be plenty of excitement and drama for the golf world.
