Golf 101: How To Hold a Golf Club
Grip your clubs correctly, and you are 50 percent of the way to playing golf up to your maximum potential. Grip them incorrectly and, irrespective of how much time and effort you devote to the game, you will not play to capacity.
There are basically three types/styles of grip (hand positioning) that are popular for the full shots:
Overlaping Grip: In this style of grip, the hands are wedded together with the little finger of the right hand resting atop, or overlapping, the index and middle finger of the left hand. The overlapping grip is also often referred to as the Vardon grip because Harry Vardon, the greatest golfer of the turn-of-the-century era first popularized it.
Ten-Finger or Baseball Grip: In this style, no wedding or overlapping of the hand is involved at all. The right hand simply rests on the club's handle, directly underneath the left, as if you were holding a baseball bat. Many golf teachers strongly discourage students from using this grip because they believe that if the hands are not in some way connected, they will tend to work against each other rather than operate as a unit.
Interlocking Grip: This style of grip is similar to the overlapping grip in that the little finger of the right hand again is the finger that meshes the right hand with the left. However, instead of the right pinky overlapping the left index finger, it interlocks between the index and middle fingers of the left hand. Some like the interlocking grip because the two fingers feel more securely intertwined than they do with the overlapping grip. This is important if you don't have particularly large hands with long fingers.
Whether you overlap, use ten-finger or interlock, this is only the beginning. Probably even more important is the way your hands relate to each other, to the handle of the club and to your clubface and the target.
In golfing terms, for a right-handed player, the more your hands are turned to the right on the grip, the more "strong" you would say the grip is. The more your hands are turned to the left on the handle, the more you would term it a "weak" grip. A "neutral" grip is one that is in the middle ground between the strong and the weak.
