Volkswagen Debuts Worlds Most Fuel Efficient Car
Volkswagen has unveiled what it claims is a car with the world's highest fuel efficiency
Volkswagen, USA Today is reporting, has unveiled what it calls the world's most efficient car-it gets 261 miles per gallon. Mail Online says that the new car, likely more a show model than an actual production vehicle, says the car actually gets 313 miles to the gallon, though they acknowledge that European rules for determining mpg vary from that in the United States.
Any way you look at it, the LX1, as Volkswagen has named it, is a stunning achievement-but at what cost? Pricing for the new car has not been announced, and Online suggest it might never be, as the LX1 might just turn out to be a show model, rather than a production vehicle. But they add, it is an impressive feat nonetheless, and lessons learned in building the car might go towards making production vehicles from Volkswagen and other makers more efficient.
To achieve such stunning mileage, engineers at Volkswagen took torque to a whole new level. The car has an 800cc diesel engine (along with a separate electric motor) and can go from 0 to 60 in just 12 seconds, but there is a difference between raw power and torque. The company is also sort of fudging on the numbers, Online says, as there is a conversion factor when the electric motor is used; thus in reality, the car does go farther on a gallon of gasoline than any other commercial car ever has, but it does so because it gets help from the electric motor, not because it squeezes out more mileage when burning gasoline.
