How Much Atrazine is in Your Drinking Water?
The popular weed killer Atrazine has been used for decades on golf courses and by landscapers. Now, research has found that Atrazine can leach into the water supply and contaminate our drinking water.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency or EPA, Americans are not exposed to unsafe levels of Atrazine, even when levels spike. They say that the current regulations that are in place are adequate to to protect human health and that amounts of Atrazine coming though their tap water is safe. The Environmental Protection Agency has not issued any warnings to pregnant women advising them to consider the use of cost effective water filtration systems in their homes.
Atrazine works within the brain to disrupt hormonal signals needed to precipitate ovulation. Studies have shown that exposure to Atrazine can cause reproductive and other abnormalities in vertebrates. This endocrine disrupter can induce reproductive changes in rodents as well. These findings suggest that Atrazine can be a hormone disrupter in humans as well. Most effects of Atrazine occur during development rather in adulthood, because the organs and brain are still in their developmental stages. The effects of development exposure from Atrazine are less likely to be reversible. Prior studies done on the effects of Atrazine exposure resulted finding abnormalities in frogs. More recent studies have shown that exposure to Atrazine can have the same effect on mammals. It is interesting to note that Atrazine was banned from the European Union in 2004.
In a study that examined the exposure of Atrazine in humans showed that the hormone pathways reverted to normal after Atrazine exposure was stopped. Normal hormone function resumed after a few days, speculating that the impact of exposure is reversible. Earlier studies have shown that Atrazine is cleared from the brain and blood in as little as 24 hours in rodents. Inhibitory effects on the brain exposed to Atrazine appear to be transient and reversible, which is the good news. The effects of Atrazine exposure to human and animal health continues to be controversial.
As the Environmental Protection Agency reviews these findings, perhaps more definitive information will become made to the public that may one day put the issue of safety of exposure to Atrazine to rest.
