Top Five Reasons Why Halo: Reach is Better Than Halo 3

Let's be honest, when a new Halo game is announced from Bungie, we all pretty much understand what's in store. Huge space marines in futuristic outfits. Check. Adolescents whining incessantly into the microphone as loud as possible. Check.

Wait. What?

If you tripped up on that last detail, you're not alone. The most surprising feature of Halo: Reach, in my opinion, is the fact that you actually have to work as a team to get a win. The days of spamming an assault rifle into all corners of the map are long gone, (well almost, they're featured in the "Slayer" playlist), and objective-style games are the new rage.

1) You have to play as a team:

As I said earlier, you're not going to win in Halo: Reach unless you actually play as a team. Every game type requires at least a basic notion of team-play. If your team decides to try and fight as a bunch of lone wolves, good luck.

2) Classes:

A first in the Halo series, new "classes" or glorified armor abilities, actually help each player to act in his own style of play. The first ability, "Sprint", is exactly what it sounds. Need to get out of a pickle without becoming prey to a rocket launcher? Use the Sprint ability (all abilities are attached to the LB button) and get out of there, quick. It acts in a similar way to the sprint button in Modern Warfare, so don't expect to be running a mile without losing any breath.

The second ability, and my personal favorite, is active camouflage. Remember the invisibility pickup from Halo 3? Now imagine that, but having the constant ability to turn invisible whenever you want. Sounds awesome, right? This ability is extremely helpful in the objective-based games, as you can silently hide behind corners and wait for a bumbling Spartan to come rifling through.

The third ability, and the one that I've seen used the most, is the jet pack. Let's face it, you throw a jet pack into a game and people are going to use it. While it does look cool, and it gets you around the map quickly and efficiently, you're also a sitting duck for anyone who has the urge to lay waste to your flying body. You can fire back, but the accuracy takes a dive when you're in the air.

The final armor ability, well at least for the Spartans, is the "armor lock". Basically, the armor lock positions your character into a kneeling position and makes them invincible to all damage, and I mean ALL damage, for a limited period of time. Someone tries to run over you in a Warthog while you're using the ability: well, let's just say that you're going to get a free kill. The ability is pretty neat, but it also makes you vulnerable to well-timed grenades your enemies throw as you run out of the ability timer.

As for the Covenant game modes, the only exclusive armor ability usable is "Evade". Essentially, your Covenant character takes a leaping dive in the direction you're currently going, making the unit much smoother to control than the Spartan, but I also found myself over-jumping enemies at points, leaving my back vulnerable to attack.

3) The game feels more like Halo: CE than Halo 3 did:

Some people might say, but hey, how is the game feeling like the first in the series a good thing? Well, to be frank, it is a good thing. I no longer feel the need to shoot a single player with six rockets to get him to meet his demise. Reach feels more realistic, well as far realistic as you can get in a fantasy sci-fi world, than Halo 3, and this is important. When you shoot someone, you feel like you're actually doing damage to them. One of the major gripes about Halo 3 was that of dual weapons. Most players didn't feel that handling two guns at the same time served any sort of point, and they were right. Halo: Reach brings us back to one weapon at a time, and this allows the player to better familiarize themselves with which weapon is good for which situation. Also, the battle rifle, which was complained about as being TOO good in Halo 3, has been removed in favor of the DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle). This gun is an absolute godsend to those who favor accuracy over spray and prey tactics. The gun behaves similarly to the battle rifle, but fires one shot per trigger pull as opposed to the BR's M16 like burst fire. If you're patient with it, the gun will be your new best friend.

4) Invasion game mode:

Essentially, Invasion could be best described as the "Rush" game mode from Battlefield Bad Company 2. Two teams of six face off against each other (one team consisting of Spartans, the other of Covenant) in a battle of offense vs. defense. The offending team must make their way through each segment of the map, destroying critical points and capturing areas from the defending team. The defending team must try and stop the offending team from pushing forward through their base. Expect huge maps with an array of vehicles, and well, an absolute ton of fun. The Halo franchise has needed a cooperative game mode like this since the dawn of Halo: CE.

5) Your experience points actually matter:

I'm a sucker for customization, and Halo: Reach doesn't falter in that aspect. It seems that Bungie have "borrowed" the experience system from Call Of Duty and put their own version of it into Reach. Each match gives you a certain amount of experience points (more if you earn top medals, win the match, etc.) which increase a set bar, and once that bar is full you level up. Sounds a bit like COD, and it is. But the one thing that Reach is doing a bit differently than Call Of Duty is allowing you to actually purchase things using said experience points. Want that flashy new helmet that the guy who just demolished you is wearing? Get to a certain level, and save up your points. From helmets, to chest pads, to shoulder and back pieces, to head mounted scopes, Halo: Reach promises to give the player a ton of customization as far as their looks go. After a while, I got sick of seeing the same Hayabusa helmet on every player in Halo 3, so it'll be nice to see some variation.
