Golf My Own Damn Way: A Real Guy's Guide to Chopping Ten Strokes Off Your Score
Dubai Desert Classic 2020 Has Woods Outside Leaderboard
The Dubai Desert Classic had the world's three top-ranked golf players paired together. But, once again, Tiger Woods was the odd one out, as he needed an eagle on 18 to salvage a -1, while Rory McIlroy took the early lead.
This is a rather big event for the PGA, as many of the world's very best are facing off. In fact, they paired Woods up with the two players who passed him in the world rankings: Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer.
Yet the Dubai Desert Classic has another hot, rising star on top of the leaderboard in round 1. Rory McIlroy set the early pace with a -7, and leads by two strokes over Sergio Garcia and Thomas Aiken. Meanwhile, Westwood and Kaymer both got up to -3, while Woods had a harder time.
Woods' problems are not surprising by now, as he had two early bogies. However, he salvaged a -1 for the day by eagling the 18th hole, just like in the old days. Yet every time he shows signs of his former self, more troubles usually unfold.
Despite the eagle, the road ahead at Dubai has gotten even harder. Woods only got himself up to six shots back of McIlroy, and is already looking up the leaderboard at other big names. Phil Mickelson isn't here to face endless comparisons to Woods, yet Westwood, Kaymer, McIlroy and Garcia are filling the gap.
The old Woods won this tournament twice, so, once again, fans hope that a familiar course could set him straight. Yet the other courses he used to win on haven't been that kind since he came back. This one looks to be no different, in spite of a back nine rally.
Even if the Dubai Desert Classic doesn't have Woods on the leaderboard, golf is learning to live without that. Westwood, Kaymer and McIlroy are lending their own star power, although they still might be more famous outside of America.
However, Dubai is far from America, so overseas fans have a lot to talk about today. Woods will try to have a better front nine, and a better 18 holes in general, tomorrow, while his top-ranked playing partners have less to do to catch McIlroy.
