How to Hit Bunker Shots
This guide will provide tips on how to get out of sand traps and help improve your golf score.
Greenside Bunkers
These shots are typically within the 50 feet and under range, and almost always require the use of a sand wedge. Like all golf shots, it is important to understand what you want to accomplish with the shot, and to visualize how the shot is going to play out. In these cases, hitting onto a green, it is imperative also to read the green before your shot. You should know where you want to land, how fast you want the ball to be going, and how the green will break/slope once the ball has hit the green.
It is against the rules to ground your club in the sand, before your shot. Therefore, if you would like to get a feel for the thickness and wetness of the sand, simply place your hand in it and pick up a handful. The wetter and more compact the sand, the harder you will have to swing. For setting up, stand a comfortable distance away from the ball, with a wider than normal stance to allow for better stability. Rotate your hips back and forth to dig your feet into the sand, allowing good grounding. Like all shots, you want your feet aligned with your hips, your hips aligned with your shoulders, and all parts of your body lined up with the projected shot line.
You want to play the ball in the front part of your stance, to ensure that the shot will be high and lofted (this is especially crucial if you have a large bunker lip directly in front of you). Opening up the clubface, your goal is to sweep the club underneath the ball (ideally without even touching the surface of the ball) and pop it up in the air. To achieve this trajectory, you must pick a point 1" - 1.5" behind the ball, in the sand, as your impact point. You are making sure to strike the sand before the ball, to sufficiently get underneath the ball. Furthermore, you are taking a full, hard swing. It is crucial to have a strong follow-through, and to be confident throughout your swing. Although it may be daunting to take a full swing at such a short distance from the hole, remember that the majority of that force is being used to hit through sand, and also to pop the ball high in the air. Of course, if you don't get under the ball enough, this could lead to "skulling" the ball and sending it screeching over the green. Hopefully with a little practice, your confidence will rise, and these types of shots will become second nature.
Fairway Bunkers
These types of shots are actually completely different from greenside bunker shots. It, of course, depends on your distance as to which club to use, but I find it much easier to use an iron (especially if the ball is sitting down), rather than a fairway wood. Generally, you will want to take 1-2 clubs more than you would normally from that distance. For instance, if you are a 150 yards away from the hole, and you would usually hit an 8-iron, then you would now take a 7-iron or a 6-iron, depending on your particular conditions. The set up and stance is the same as for greenside bunkers. Line up your entire body toward the target, take a wide stance, and dig your feet into the sand for stability. However, the position of the ball is where these shots start to differ. You will want to place the ball more in the front-middle of your stance, rather than all the way in the front, to allow for a longer hit. Also, you are no longer opening the clubface up, but keeping it a standard loft. Finally, you certainly do not want to hit 1"-1.5" behind the ball and get under it. The goal here is to pick the ball as cleanly off the sand as possible, just like it was sitting up on a sand tee. Again, with some practice, you will realize how simple these shots really are.
