Golf Course Tips for Beginners
For the beginner golfer there are some simple things you can do on the course to keep from holding up play, while having more success and fun.
A frequent offender is the beginner golfer, who does not yet have the skill to hit long enough drives to move play along. For someone who can only drive the ball less than 100 yards, just getting to the green can take 4 - 6 shots. This is not only time-consuming for everyone in your foursome - and the foursomes behind you! - it is physically and mentally tiring for the beginner. The seeming lack of success may further discourage the new golfer in a game that is already challenging.
Any easy solution is to play to your skill level. If a hole is a par 4, for example, calculate how far it will take you to get to the green in three strokes. Not, Tiger Woods' three strokes. Your average three strokes. If you hit the ball 50 yards, then you should drop the ball in the middle of the fairway at the 150 marker. This assumes you will then one-putt for par.
While on vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii a few years back, I had a wonderful opportunity to play beautiful tracks along the beach with holes that routinely measured 500 to 600 yards. I was suffering from a back injury and I knew that teeing off would not only be difficult, the extra strokes would cause me further pain. Instead I dropped the ball at 300, stayed right up with my partners and had a lot of fun enjoying the beautiful scenery.
Good course management is another technique that will allow you to finish a round in a timely manner. If you are not able yet to make it across large hazards such as water, simply plan your shot to finish right before the hazard and then drop on the other side. The same applies with dog legs and other design elements that increase the risk of ending up in the rough or worse yet, out of bounds. Keeping the ball in play reduces needless time searching for lost balls or getting out of tricky situations that only Tour players can pull off on TV.
Don't forget to also let the foursome behind you play through, if it is clear they are waiting. These simple tricks will make your rounds more enjoyable while you are working on your swing with a coach and practicing at the range. Plus, other golfers will be more willing to play with you, giving you more experience on the course.
