Put Put Golf Course: Kid Friendly Landscaping Projects
This simple and easy project makes your summer backyard a fun retreat for the whole family.
PLANNING: Gather the family together to plan your golf course. Map out where in the backyard you would like to put your golf course. How many holes can you fit in your allotted space while still allowing movement around the space? Talk about what things you like at miniature golf courses. Plan a theme for your miniature golf course. Once you have planned, head to the backyard. Using spray paint and a tape measure, spray the outline of the area you will be making into your miniature golf course. A golf course of at least 9'x12' or larger is most ideal. Also decide if you will use real grass, or artificial turf. Real grass is less expensive, but will not be able to be used year round if you live in colder climates. It will also require mowing and watering. Artificial turf has come a long ways from the Astroturf days. Many companies offer grass like turf for a nominal to moderate fee. Plan on shopping around before purchasing. Most artificial grass can be purchased for between $2.79-4 a square foot. Artificial turf will allow you to play year round, won't require the use of a mower, and won't need watering. However, it will require more time when laying it.
TEAR IT DOWN: Once you have mapped out the area you will use for your miniature golf course, you will need to kill off all vegetation. Using a weed and grass killer, spray the area you will be using for your miniature golf course. Wait two-four weeks for all vegetation to completely die off. Than use a rototiller or shovel to loosen the dirt and remove any dead leaves, grass, or plants from the area. Have children help pull grass out and loosen dirt from grass clods, then throw them in the trash. A game to make this chore a little more fun is to have children toss the grass clods at a fence or side wall. Lay a tarp at the bottom of where they throw the clods to catch any leftover dirt. Children will have fun tossing them, then picking the grass up and throwing it into the trash. Any leftover dirt can be transferred easily from the tarp back into the hole.
BUILD IT UP: The next step is to build your wall. This can be done one of two ways. You can use a decorative cinder block retaining wall to make the outline of the golf course, or landscape boulders. Landscape boulders give a more rustic, natural look. Cinder block walls will give you a clean, neat look. If you use cinder block retaining walls, you will want your retaining wall at least two but preferably three cinder blocks high. Make sure that when placing the cinder blocks, they are placed evenly and level around the perimeter of where you will be placing your miniature golf course. Older children can help place the blocks, while younger children can have fun showing you where the line is and where to put the next rock or cinder block.
FILL IT UP: Now it's time to fill your hole. The first level is already done for you. The dirt that you have in the inside of the miniature golf course will need to be compacted. You can easily rent a compactor to compact the dirt in your course at places like Home Depot. Next, you will need limestone rock inside the course. You will need enough to make two inches depth around the entire inside of the course. Use your compactor to compact the rock down. The final step in readying your golf course is to place two inches of sand on top of the compacted rock inside the course. Children can easily help with putting sand in, helping to carry the wheelbarrow, or raking. After placing the sand, use your compacter to compact the sand down. Make sure the limestone and sand are level after compacting. If using real grass, you will need to place an additional two inches of top soil. Then plant your grass seed, or lay sod.
GET THE COURSE READY! This is the funnest part for kids to help with. Now comes the time when they can see there hard work in action! If you are laying artificial turf, you will want to dig for your putting holes first, then lay the artificial turf down according to the manufacturer instructions. Dig for your putting holes after you place your seed or sod if you have used real grass. Hammer any poles in the ground. Place your putting cups in and secure. Decorate and set up your miniature golf course. Now you can get playing!
IDEAS FOR MINIATURE GOLF COURSE:
1. PENDULUM: To make a pendulum, hammer a Shepard's hook into the ground. Attach string or small chain to the end of the Shepard's hook. attach the end to a small or medium sized weighted ball. Measure string or chain so ball sits slightly above the ground right over your putting hole. When it's time to play, simply give the ball a small push so it swings back and forth over the hole, making a harder shot!
2. TIKI ROOM: Purchase a tiki house, or other wooden style birdhouse from craft stores like Michael's. Have children help paint and decorate the house. To place over the hole, simply cut the front of the house so only the two sides, the top and the back of the house remain. Place the house over the putting hole. Makes for a fun, but more difficult shot.
3. LAND MINE: To make for a harder shot, gather some medium sized rocks. Strategically place them around the outside of the putting hole, leaving spaces in between slightly larger than your golf ball so that the ball can still go through, but making for a more challenging shot to get into the hole.
4. TOTEM POLE SHOT: Purchase a small to medium sized totem pole. Place in front of the hole, in back, or to the side if desired. This makes for a much more difficult shot.
5. GLOW IN THE DARK: For a fun, glow in the dark course you can play at night, simply purchase glow in the dark paint from a craft or hardware store. Paint the inside of the holes, or any objects you may use for your course in at least two to three coats of the paint. Makes for a fun time, even at night. Kids will love helping!
