Golf Short Irons - Tips on Playing the Shots
Once you determine what sort of zone the hole is situated in, you can start to plan the shot.
First, you want to start any shot you play with the 7-, 8-, or 9-iron at the center of the green. The reason for this is that while these clubs have a lot of loft on them, they'll still drift a little bit in the direction of your prevailing shot. If you fade the ball and the hole is on the left side of the green, you should always aim at the center of the green. If you hit it straight you'll be fine, and if you hit a fade you'll still catch the right side of the green. However, if you aim right at the flag and hit even a slight pull, you're going to miss the green. Keep in mind that in order to dance you first have to get on the dance floor.
The same logic applies if the pin is on the right and you draw the ball: Always aim at the center of the green with the 7-, 8-, and 9-irons. If you gun for a pin on the right and push the ball, you're off the green. If you aim at the center and accidentally hit that push, you'll be all over the flag! Another consideration is that you never want to "short side" yourself. That means that you never want to miss the green on the same side as the flag. The reason? You'll have one of the toughest up-and-downs in the game because you won't have much room to land your chip or pitch in front of the hole. That means a lot of added pressure, which ups the chances you'll fluff your pitch or chip, or hit it way past the hole into three-putt territory.
If the hole is cut in the front of the green, select a club that will put you pin high if you hit it thin. Got that? That means do not hit the club that will put you pin high if you hit it your average distance. Take the club that will put you pin high if you slightly mis-hit it. The logic behind that? If you hit it thin you're pin high. If you hit it normally, you'll be a few yards past the hole If you hit it flush you'll be on the middle of the green.
If the hole is cut in the back of the green, you want to choose a club so that if you hit pure-absolutely flush-you will put your ball pin high. You don't want to take the club that will put an average hit pin high, because if you hit it flush you'll be over the green. If you make your club selection using this logic, more often than not you'll be a few yards below the hole, which is not a bad spot at all. If you hit it a little thin, you'll be in the middle of the green, no harm no foul.
Any time you have to carry a hazard, give yourself a margin of error. Around the green this usually means bunkers or water. If water fronts the green, always play at least to the center of the green, even if the hole is cut in the front. Same goes for any bunker fronting the green. In these situations, longer is safer. If in the odd situation the trouble is behind the green, it only follows that the safest route is to play to the front middle of the green and trust your putter. (If you're playing to a green completely surrounded by hazards, you have only one choice for where to land your ball: dead middle of the green.)
