Selected Shorts Celebrates Black History Month in San Antonio
Selected Shorts, a public radio program that reads short stories to live audiences, came to San Antonio with a program honoring notable African-American authors Charles Johnson and Percival Everett and Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat.
The program began with a performance of "The Ballad of Henry Box Brown" from Sterling Houston's Black and Blue: 400 Years of Struggle and Transcendence. The performers, local actors Danielle King and SkudR Jones, brought the minstrel piece to life, working in well-choreographed harmony and acting out the ballad's key moments in believable fashion. Their performance warmed the crowd up for the next, slightly less showy piece, "Dr. King's Refrigerator" by Charles Johnson, which was read by Michael Genét. Genét, a prolific screenwriter and actor seen in films such as One Fine Day, 25th Hour, and She Hate Me, recently won the NAACP Image Award for the best screenwriting in a motion picture for Talk to Me.
Isaiah Sheffer, the host of Selected Shorts, appeared after Genét to read Percival Everett's "The Fix." As regular Selected Shorts listeners can imagine, Shefffer's pacing and rhythm had the crowd on the edge of their seats for the lengthy piece, which dove convincingly from reality into magical realism without so much as a warning. Much to the delight of the hard-listening crowd, a brief intermission came at the end of the story-a much-needed moment of fresh air to sort through the puzzle Everett's story had left hanging in the air.
Following the intermission, Sheffer welcomed the crowd back with his hallmark humor and a game of sing along in which he sang the first few bars of a song and the audience, at least in part, finished it. This exercise was surprisingly amusing and even those listeners eager to get back to the stories were forced to sing a line or two and laugh along with everyone else when Sheffer's lyrical call was answered with silence or a solo shy voice from the rear of the auditorium. Soon enough, though, it was time for the final story, Edwidge Danticat's "The Bridal Seamstress," about a young reporter's encounter with a Haitian American haunted by her past. Danticat's story was read by Myra Lucretia Taylor, who has appeared on Broadway in Macbeth and A Streetcar Named Desire, among others, and on screen in Changing Lanes and all the Law amp; Order series, to name a few. Taylor brought life to Danticat's piece with the various accents she employed in the portions of dialogue, and this finale was, for some, the most impressive piece of the evening.
The night ended for most after Taylor's performance, but five lucky people and their guests won an invite to meet and celebrate with the cast backstage. Everyone else was left with the memory of three fantastic short stories read by three talented performers, and although this episode of Selected Shorts was designed to celebrate black authors, as Isaiah Sheffer said early in the program, the stories were phenomenal ones to read during any month of the year.
