Guan Tianglang and Other Young Golf Prodigies
The 14 year old is making headlines after earning a spot in the upcoming Masters.
On Sunday, November 4, 2020, Guan Tianglang earned a berth in the Masters when he won the Asia-Pacific Amateur Competition. Tianglang, who is only 14 years old, made history with his victory as he will be the youngest player to ever be in the Masters. He got his victory by using the controversial belly putter, which may or may not be allowed in the Masters. Though there have been other young players to compete at Augusta National Golf Club, he is the youngest by over two years. Here is a look at five other young golfers who captured headlines by competing in major events.
Tom Morris Jr.
Tom Morris Jr. was just 17 years old when he won his first championship in 1868. This was just the eighth year for the Open Championship. He would go on to win the next three championships in 1869, 1870 and 1872. Morris was even able to defeat his talented father, Tom Morris Sr., during his career. Tragically, he died in 1875 when he was just 24 years old.
Michelle Wie
In 2003, when Michelle Wie was just 13 years old, she made history at the Kraft Nabisco Championship as the youngest player to make the cut in an LPGA event. She finished in the top ten in the Kraft Nabisco Championship, which is a major event on the LPGA. When she was 14, she once again made history. This time, she made history by shooting a sub-par round in a PGA event. She narrowly missed the cut at the Sony Open.
Andy Zhang
In July of 2020, Andy Zhang made history as the youngest golfer to compete in the U.S. Open. The 14 year old nearly hadn't made it into the tournament. He came to the event as an alternate and if no one had scratched, then he would not have had a slot in the tournament. He did get his chance, however, when Paul Casey was forced to leave the event due to an injury.

At the age of 15, Lydia Ko not only won the LPGA amateur championship but also became the youngest LPGA Tour event winner. She won the Canadian Women's Open in August of 2020. She does not plan to turn professional just yet and she does plan on going to college.

He managed to make the cut which is quite an accomplishment. Before getting to the Masters, he had an impressive showing in many other events. When he played in the British Amateur Championship in 2020, he was the youngest player to ever win.
