Pink Floyd, the Ultimate Concert Experience
Experiencing Pink Floyd perform at Versailles, as a 17 year old idiot who stumbled upon the venue with his French traveling buddy, opened my eyes to an entirely new understanding of what music could be. To this day, no concert can touch that magic.
But then we saw a huge pig hanging in the sky above us, and as the sounds of clocks and chimes rang out all around us, a giant bed flew through the sky down towards the stage, exploding behind the huge round screen displaying colors and lights like we had never seen. This was way more than a concert. What we had happened upon was a spectacle of light, sound, and enormous surreal props. As soon as we realized this was something special, we pushed our way all the way to the front of the venue. We watched as lasers shone out above the backdrop of the castle, lights surveying the crowd of over one hundred thousand true fans of Pink Floyd. We were two posers living the ultimate Pink Floyd dream. But I was an immediate believer. I never wanted it to end, and after four hours, I thought it might not.
When it did end, Chris and I couldn't stop talking about it. We went out and bought as many Pink Floyd cassette tapes (remember, this was 1987) as we could the next day. Pink Floyd was all I listened to the rest of the summer, and their music has remained at the top of my list, from the days of cassette tapes, to CDs, to MP3s, to iPod downloads. That concert I stumbled upon in 1987 somewhere in France was one of the most pivotal moments in my life. Music can change a person's life, and Pink Floyd changed mine.
