“Thailand’s Ancient Arts”- Bo Sang Umbrella Making Village & Baan Tawai Handcraft Village, Near Chiang Mai
The Bor Sang Umbrella making village, Sa Paper making village, and the Baan Tawai Handicraft villages, near Chiang Mai, were on my itinerary. All of the most beautiful handicrafts were in one place!
During a previous trip to Thailand, the guide stopped at one of the gong villages to experience the traditional way of making gongs without machinery.
These off-the-beaten-path visits are a wonderful way to really experience the Thai culture, meet- the- people and make purchases direct from the villagers.
Bor Sang Umbrella making Village
This time the Bor Sang Umbrella making village, Sa Paper making village, and the Baan Tawai Handicraft villages, near Chiang Mai, were on my itinerary. All of the most beautiful handicrafts were in one place!
There were hundreds of umbrellas of every size, shape, and color with gorgeous hand-painted designs of dragons, flowers, birds and scenery.
Visitors watched the artisans as they followed the steps to create their umbrellas. It was like an assembly-line beginning with making each of the parts to the drawing station, sundry station and finally the finished umbrella. These umbrellas were prepared with bamboo strips composing the framework and the handle, latex for the varnish, and other natural products.
The Sa paper was specially made from the stems of the Mulberry tree bark for the umbrella's "sail". The complex process began with soaking the bark in water for 24 hours then boil with wood-ash until it was soft and continuing to boil the mixture from three to four hours. After rinsing the bark, the mixture was pounded and placed in large water filled concrete trays. The artisan stirred and released the mixture through a strainer into rectangular metal screens and dried it in the sun for 20 minutes. The substance formed wafer-thin paper.
Each layer of the paper was pasted on the umbrella frames with glue until it became thick and strong then after drying, the artists painted their designs. These umbrellas ranged from small for cocktail glasses to larger sizes for gardens or patios.
The usually quiet Bor Sang village is the center of a three-day festival in January. Lanterns hang everywhere along the street and the umbrellas decorate the buildings, houses and shops. Visitors could enjoy the parades, bands, food, exhibitions and Miss Bor Sang pageant contest. The Bor Sang village is only nine miles east of Chiang Ma
Baan Tawai Handcraft Village
The artisans could carve an entire tree into a piece of art! In just minutes they create intricate designs without patterns.
If you visit the handicraft village don't forget to bring clothing, handbag, hat, jacket,
T-shirt, leg of the jeans, or other personal item for the artists to paint their designs.
Many of the traditional northern Thailand designs have been used since early times.
The Baan Tawai Handcraft Village was the best place to find home décor, arts, crafts, silk, jewelry, boxes, gifts, furniture, Buddha figures, antique reproductions, incense, candles, soap, gift packs, ornaments, lamps, bamboo products, wall hangings, frames and more. These handicrafts are sold in the cities for higher prices.
The Baan Tawai Handicraft Village is located 15 miles from Chiang Mai.
