Flak Vest Devotion #31 - Secret Sins Have Open Impact
The things we do in secret can have an open impact. The military combats secret drug use with the random urinalysis program.
"This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares." Romans 2:16
After the Vietnam conflict, the military recognized that illicit drug use that occurred in Vietnam had a negative impact upon combat readiness. While it is debated among historians how widespread this drug use may or may not have been, the military knew it had a problem that needed to be corrected. These troops were often seeking stress relief from the rigors of combat. While they may have thought what they did on their own time wasn't the military's business, that which is done in secret can have an impact when you are trying to do your job. It could be disastrous to have someone high on crack cocaine driving a fuel truck on a flight line or maneuvering an M1 Abrams tank.
Therefore, the military came up with a random urinalysis program in an attempt to combat the problem. The program will often use a random process involving certain digits of a person's social security number. Due to this randomness, a person could be rarely chosen to provide a sample or they could be called three months in row. Additionally, a commander can have an entire unit tested. There have been cases where a unit urinalysis test was conducted on the Friday before the weekend. Then on Monday another unit test was conducted and there were people who passed on Friday but failed on Monday. These military members made the mistake of thinking a recent urinalysis meant they could party that weekend without regard for accepted military conduct. They had a career impacting wakeup call when the results came back.
There are many sins that can be committed in broad daylight so to speak. However, many sins are committed in secret and taken to the grave. Within the military, people will think they can take illicit drugs and not be caught. But, the military urinalysis system ensures if a person is ingesting illicit drugs they have an increased chance of discovery. Some drugs barely last a weekend and some stay in the human system for several weeks. For more serious cases, hair follicle tests can be conducted, which are even more reliable for testing for these substances.
For the follower of Jesus Christ, we must ensure that we obey the law and not resort to using illicit drugs. Our stress relief should come through our relationship with Jesus Christ and we should serve in all areas of life with excellence. In Mark 7:37 we are told that Jesus Christ "hath done all things well." Additionally, we are told by the Apostle Paul to "be imitators of God." The believer in Christ pursues excellence so their testimony will draw people to Christ. Never let it be said that a disciple of Jesus Christ is a "slacker" or does things merely "good enough for government work."
Father God, strengthen me in my walk with you and show me areas of my life where I haven't practiced excellence in my daily life. Help me to rely upon you for stress relief and never turn to substances whether legal or illegal for that help. Please help me to protect my testimony so that I may draw men and women to your saving grace.
