The Best Way to Get Started in Golf
Being a Golf Pro this may sound a little odd, but you will see I have my reasons.
I started playing at 12 years old, I took one lesson to get the basics down and have not taken one since. I think this has helped my development greatly and has made me not only enjoy the game more, but has made me a better player.
I have always believed that every golf swing is different. Some will swing hard, some soft. Some more upright, some more around, but in the end it is the result that counts. I see too many good golf pros trying to teach everyone the same exact swing. This just isn't possible and they should be able to work with what their student has in both physical and mental abilities. Some students like hands on teaching, others are more visual while some even learn better by simply telling them what to do.
I came to this conclusion when I realized that you learn to play golf by playing golf! You can learn to hit the ball decent on the driving range, but don't spend too much time there. You will be missing out on the small subtleties that make you a good player. You can't learn how to put the ball in the hole on the driving range. It takes time out on the course to figure out how to get out of trouble, how to navigate yourself around a hole and when it is a good idea to take your medicine and put the ball back in the fairway after a wayward shot. Yet still after someone has a bad round, the first thing they do is spend hours on the range and putting green. I've even known people to only play once a week while spending 4 days on the practice tee! And they wonder why they don't score better!
I especially think this is the best way for Jr. golfers. Let them have fun with it. Give them the first year to do things on their own. Teach them about the game, the basic rules and how to act out on the golf course. If they are still interested by year 2, look into fitting them for some equipment, golf shoes, Jr. clubs etc. Then get them into a golf camp or a lesson or two with a local pro to get the basics down. Once you have done this, let them go on their own again, watch them learn how to correct their mistakes and they will become better more efficient players because of it.
If down the road they decide they want to go further in the game, then a lesson once a week would be fine, but make sure the instructor is only making small changes and does not try to re-work the whole swing in one day!
