A Museum for Trolleys? Showcase for Old Light Rail in Suburban Washington
Trolleys were convenient and less polluting. A museum just outside Washington, D.C. showcases some old models and gives a demonstration ride.
The National Capital Trolley Museum, located in the suburb of Colesville, MD, provides a showcase for the hardware of historic electrical street railways, explains their impact on the development of communities, and offers rides of up to 20 minutes through an adjacent park. While the concentration is on the equipment, settings, and related history of the National Capital Area, one exhibit hall features cars from other regions and Europe.
The Museum's Main Hall is actually a working model of street cars, automobiles, and pedestrians as they interacted in a Washington area location in the 1930's. Supplementary information describes the impact of street cars on various local communities and how they were portrayed in movies. There is also a demonstration of how the required electric power was generated and transmitted, including the shift from underground transmission within the city limits of Washington and the overhead wires in the suburbs.
But of course thehighlight for most visitors, especially families, will be the street car rides. There are three versions, of eight, fifteen, and twenty minutes, at fares ranging from $4-$7. All are through Northwest Branch Park, providing a feel for the ride from Washington into the countryside, which began much closer to downtown in the turn of the century electrification era.
Street cars began to be phased out of the capital area in the 1950's and were gone by 1962, but, as with a number of other urban areas, proposals are being made for their return. Portland, Oregon; San Diego, California; Baltimore, Maryland, and others have significant light rail projects under way. So a visit to the Museum gives a taste of things to come for many partrs of the country as well as a nostalgic look back.
The Museum is open Thursday through Sunday in the summer, with children's activities on Thursdays and Fridays.
