Compression fractures generally are something that happens to people over the age of sixty. At first the pain is mistaken as a simple backache.
When one ages, the bones can become thinner, softer and easier to break, especially in the back. Osteoporosis can also develop. Osteoporosis is a condition that can actually cause one's bones to become thinner.
What exactly is a compression fracture?
A compression fracture is a small break or fracture that can form along one's vertebrae. The vertebra is the bones that make up our spine.
What can cause a compression fracture?
A compression fracture can occur easily if the bones are thin. One can break any of these small bones by doing every day tasks such as bending, lifting small objects or even coughing hard.

Symptoms of a possibly compression fracture includes:
Severe back pain that comes on suddenly
Worse pain when you stand or rise up
Lessening of pain to some degree with lying down

Signs that you may have had multiple compression fractures
A patient may have had multiple compression fractures during her life and may have passed the fracture off as being part of the aging process. Some signs that may indicate this are:
Height loss
Curved back
Stomach problems (this can include stomach being an appearance of a bulging stomach, loss of appetite, constipation, and problems with digestive health).

How to treat a compression fracture if it has just happened recently
First, your doctor will want to have X-rays taken to see exactly what damage has been done. He/she may suggest that the patient have a procedure called Kyphoplasty. This can help stabilize the bone and repair the fracture.
If this procedure is not an option, the patient may be given a steroid injection to help relieve his/her pain.
The main thing that older people need to realize is that just because they are getting older does not mean that they should expect to feel pain. If they suddenly begin experiencing a new pain, they should consult their physician about it promptly.
Two thirds of all cases of compression fractures goes untreated because patients assume back pain is just a normal part of aging and it can not be stopped.
