Who Can Win the 2020 Masters and Why
An overview and analysis of the contenders for the first Major of the year, the 2020 Masters golf tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia
Tiger Woods - To most, including the professional oddsmakers across the 'Pond,' Tiger Woods is the overwhelming favorite. Why? I have no idea. Since making significant swing changes recently with swing guru Sean Foley, Woods has not proven he can put together 4 rounds of championship golf. His swing changes are designed to protect that left knee, which has required surgery 4 times. The changes he has been employing go all the way down to the putter, which makes him not ready for prime time at this years Masters. He does have an excellent knowledge of the course, which sets him apart from the field, aside only from Phil Mickleson, who arguably knows the course better. Odds: 10-1
Phil Mickleson - Mickleson's noted recent diagnosis of arthritis is under control and will not slow him down from his preparation for the 2020 Masters. As previously stated, his superior course knowledge and long-hitting, puts him near the top of the list to win this year, provided he gets his putting in place. Phil has nine top 5 finishes. Odds: 8-1
Martin Kaymer - The world number #1 player has got to figure in the mix this year. His prior performance at the Masters is definitely not grounds to pick him, (Missed Cut in 2020 amp; 2020) however, he recent ascension to the top, his win at the 2020 PGA, wins on the European Tour, and his recent consistency, I believe make him the top pick to win this year. Odds 7-1.
Lee Westwood - The recently former world number 1's game travels well, and his performance in previous Majors indicate that he knows how to get into contention, but has yet to figure out how to close the deal. He has all the shots and the putter to win, if he and his caddy get their stuff together, and learn the course. Westwood is poised to win a Major, but I believe The Open Championship will be his first, if he ever wins one. Odds: 12-1.
Graeme McDowell - The 2020 U.S. Open champion amp; 2020 European Ryder Cup MVP has proven he can manage his game in tough situations and close the deal. He didn't blink as he took down Tiger Woods, head-to-head at the 2020 Chevron World Challenge in December. McDowell is a natural golfer and loves putting when it counts. McDowell will be a strong contender at Augusta. Missing the cut at Bay Hill this week at +9, however may signal a problem. Odds: 10-1.
Vijay Singh - Singh's success after 40 may be near the end, if you count only winning as success. However, don't count him out to place high this year. Singh has regained his consistency, and works harder than everyone, but still has remaining putting issues that you simply cannot have at Augusta National. Odds: 20-1
Ernie Els - The Big Easy is not coming into this year's tournament with any momentum. Els' game definitely suits at Augusta, but his putting still holds him back. Odds: 30-1
Retief Goosen - The South African has proven he can contend at Augusta. He finished T-13 in 2004, third in 2005, and T-38 in 2020 amp; 2020, and a MC in 2020. A two-time U.S. Open winner, Goosen's beautiful swing tempo and short game make him suited to place well here. However, Goosen is prone to make small errors in club/shot selection that have cost him big numbers. If he can manage his game this year, he has a better than average chance to contend on Sunday. Odds: 20-1
Paul Casey - Casey is poised to contend this year at the Masters. His victories in 2020 and his strong level of consistency position Casey to be a factor to be in contention in the final round. Casey has few short-comings, and has fixed the ones he had. Odds: 8-1.
Sergio Garcia - Garcia is back from a self-imposed period of isolation from the game, and seems to have some excellent days on the course, recording back-to-back days in the 60's in the 2020 Transitions Championship. However, like days of old, he cannot put together 4 rounds of solid drives, accurate iron shots, and good putting. Go figure. He did place T-4 in 2004, but those days are long gone. Recently, he has been upset with his performance at Augusta, but look for a renewed vigor and early round success for him this year, but it will not result in a win. Odds: 30-1.
Padraig Harrington - Harrington has 3 Major wins and has the game for Augusta, but his frequent swing tinkering is affecting his consistency. Odds: 30-1
Aaron Baddeley - A recent win for Baddeley at The Northern Trust Open should give him the confidence to win at Augusta. He now has 3 wins on the PGA Tour and has shown he can be one of, if not the best putter on Tour, so he should be able to contend. His experience at the Masters is somewhat limited, so his lack of experience will cost him. Odds: 20-1
Rory McElroy - McElroy is perhaps the most talented player in the game of golf right now. However, with the flashes of greatness, we've seen a level of unfocused/lackadaisical play from him that leaves many wondering if he will break through for a Major win. After shooting an 80 in The Open Championship in 2020, McElroy seems to be afraid of winning the big one, and be able to handle what would come with a Major win, including the demands it would place on his life, which he likes to keep simple. Rory could win the Masters this year by merely showing up, based solely on his level of talent and more importantly, if he really wants the win and the life-changing things that go with fame. Odds: 12-1.
Luke Donald -Donald has shown that his stellar iron play, bunker prowess, and consistency can dominate the Tour, even despite his inaccuracy off the tee, by taking down the world's number 1 at the WGC Accenture Match Play. Augusta National doesn't require accurate drives so Donald should be in good shape. Look for Donald to not only contend, but to be in the next to final group on Sunday. Donald is the sleeper to win. Odds: 10-1
Hunter Mahan - With 4 top ten finishes out of 7 starts this year, Mahan positions himself to seriously contend for the first Major title of the year with his new attitude, new marriage, and solid play. Another Sean Foley disciple, Mahan has all the tools to win a Major, if he can master the greens at Augusta. Prior to the 2020 Ryder Cup, Mahan's only deficiency was his lack of experience in crucial situations. Although things didn't work out well for him then, he has moved on from that experience and has risen above it. Odds: 10-1.
The Rest of The Field- The rest of the field is strong, let's be honest. One thing that has been proven this year is that the depth of the field, especially on the PGA Tour has been strong and unprecedented. You must look closely at the chances of Bubba Watson (who leads the PGA Tour in driving distance amp; greens in regulation), Martin Laird of Scotland, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Jonathan Byrd, Ian Poulter, Gary Woodland, Nick Watney, and Matteo Manassero (he still needs to qualify since he was T-74 amp; missed the cut at Bay Hill this week at +5), and don't count out Steve Marino or FedEx Cup points leader, Mark Wilson.
