The Re-opening of a Museum in a Sussex Town Has Been Marked with a Colourful Opening Ceremony
Chickasaw Christy Christoffersen, great-granddaughter of original enrollee William Nathan Ragland helped open Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, in Sussex, England when they opened its doors on Saturday, July 28th following a $1 million refurbishment.
Native American dancers, including Christoffersen, performed at the ceremony to celebrate the unveiling of a exhibition on Grey Owl, Archibald Belaney, who was originally from Hastings.
Grey Owl was an Englishman who traveled to America and told people he was a Native American. He was discredited after his death but is now being remembered for his conservation efforts.
Before the ceremony Hasting Council leader Peter Pragnell said: "I am really looking forward to seeing the town's main museum open again, and to see the many improvements that have been made.
"To celebrate the Grey Owl connection we are privileged in having a Native American dance group, Thunder Nation, performing at the opening ceremony."
Christoffersen helped open the museum, then she and the small group blessed the stage, performed traditional Intertribal dancing and she gave a speech in which she told what life was like as a Chickasaw in Oklahoma.
In her speech she said, "It's not unusual to be Indian in Oklahoma. It's more unusual NOT to be Indian. It's a bit hard to explain but it is like seeing pubs all over England. You aren't surprised by a pub here, they are a fixture. I guess Indian stuff is a fixture in Oklahoma in the same way. You take it for granted. So when I came to England and people were so fascinated by it and wanted to know what it was all about, it surprised me that they didn't already know. I'd taken for granted all of the culture I'd had around me my whole life. I'm not like that any more."
She also added, "Since I came to England I have discovered that the English people are very interested in Native American culture. They are very respectful about it and they are eager to learn. I am asked many different questions which I am happy to answer. I love to tell them my family stories and to tell them about the different peoples and how things are back in Oklahoma and what happens at pow wows and stomp dances. I tell them that even though we are different tribes, we are like a big family, we love each other, and we still have normal family problems but we know that we need to stick together. Since I have been living in England, I have met a few other Indian people living here. We have found having a similar upbringing comforting to each other and my Indian friends and I cling to each other like family.
"The English are very interested in our culture and sadly, there have been lots of stereotypes that Hollywood has put forth that are not the way we all are. It is my wish that by standing here telling my story, I can show you that there is no one kind of "Indian". There are many different tribes and peoples. But we are all of one heart and we can learn together to be one and make a better world.
"Archibald Belaney went to America to visit Indians when it wasn't popular. When it wasn't cool to be Indian and things were very difficult for them. It's thanks to Grey Owl and other art contributors at the museum that things are getting better. They have brought the beautiful artwork home to England to share and to be cherished for generations to come. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for that and for showing respect and love to Indian people even when it wasn't the cool thing to do. I hope that many people come to enjoy these beautiful items and I thank you for coming today and letting us share our culture with you."
After the show, Christy remarked "I forgot for a minute I was even in regalia and it puzzled me why all these people wanted to take my picture. Everyone was so warm and friendly though and so curious about our culture. I only hope that I can serve as a worthy ambassador."
