Tiger Woods - Sex Addict or Idiot?
In January 2020, as Tiger Woods was hidden away in the Pine Grove Behavioural Health and Addiction Services Clinic in Hattiesberg Mississippi, fans of another sport were enthusiastically lampooning the oversexed golfer.
While Woods trod the six week Gentle Path programme for sex addicts at a cost of 60,000 dollars, Australian fans at the Open tennis championship in Melbourne - young men and women alike - laughed as they faced press cameras and waved large placards saying "I've been with Tiger."
The Australians, never known for their reverence or humility, were openly deriding the sexual incontinence of golf's best-known 'player'.
It was good to see the world deriding his behavior, especially young men, because so often men who cheat or seduce lots of women are admired and envied. Part of the derision is based on the fact that everyone realizes Woods' 'success' with these females owed more to his millions than his golfing prowess or charm. And people realize too that his disreputable string of grabby 'other women' were worthless.
Any woman who'd hop into bed with a man knowing he has a wife, toddler and baby at home is, pretty much by definition, not worth knowing.
The fact that Woods didn't know they weren't worth knowing - or even bedding - says as much about his stupidity as it says about their shallowness.
So why is Woods seen as a figure to be mocked and pitied while other babehounds have been admired and seen as lucky? It's largely down to the dissembling and the weakness he's exhibited. That and his sheer foolishness. Didn't he know, we all asked each other, that his harem of slutty wanabees would stampede to the press once the first of them broke cover? Didn't he know he'd be exposed and seen to be ridiculous?
This is not a case like that of flamboyant London nightclub owner Peter Stringfellow or Playboy entrepreneur Hugh Hefner. Those are guys who are open, frank and honest about their lack of commitment to any particular woman and their huge appetite for casual sex with new partners. Whether you're shocked, neutral or approving of their choices, it's clear they're not generally deceiving the world about who they are and their girlfriends are able to freely make a choice whether to put up with their behavior or not.
Woods on the other hand is the classic deceitful cake-eating cheat (times how many? 10? More?) He dishonestly hid his true nature - though not very well as it turned out. Presenting himself as a good husband and family man, he pulled the wool over Elin's eyes - though not for very long. He cheated his fans. He cheated his sponsors. He even cheated the women he was cheating with.
Time was that it was seen as pretty spirited when a married man played the field. But times change and, in this particular case at least, it just seems pitiful that Woods didn't see he was swapping a gem for a few bits of old brass.
He can hide all he likes behind the 'clinic's' quasi-medical 'sex-addiction' image. An awful lot of people around the world will continue to view him as a greedy, ill-disciplined sleaze-ball who repeatedly and knowingly put greedy, worthless women before the interests of his wife and children.
Woods may have paid for the Pine Grove's Gentle Path but chances are he has a well-deserved rocky road ahead.
