Do Not Buy the Latest Gaming System: 3 Reasons Not to Be an Early Adopter
Every year, there is a new video game system '" sometimes three. Here are three reasons not to buy a gaming system as soon as it comes out:
1. Not enough games. This seems to be an intractable problem for video game makers. When a new system comes out, there simply are not enough games to choose from. Over the years, many of the old games will migrate to the new system. But it seems that many game manufacturers wait to see if a system succeeds before deciding to create games for it. No matter how cool your gaming system is, it will be disappointing if there are too few games to play.
2. Too expensive. Initially, a new video game system will cost an arm and a leg. In my experience, though, after a rival system (or two) come out, the system's price will drop dramatically (think, for example, about the after-Christmas sales that occur the year that a new system comes out). Consequently, there is a major cost to those who choose to be early adopters and buy the latest, greatest video game system.
3. Just play on-line. Finally, it might be a mistake to buy a gaming system at all. If you like network gaming, you might be better off buying a high-end computer and playing PC-based games. It seems inevitable that PC games will ultimately dominate the market. Arguably, gaming systems are relics from the 1980's that are on their way out.
Of course, you will probably still choose to buy that new gaming system eventually. You can remove some of the risk by considering the issues listed above and waiting a while.
