Everything Beginner Golfers Need for Success

Beginner golfers sometimes don't enjoy the game. This may be due to the overwhelming number of tips and suggestions. The most important thing a new golfer needs for success is to ignore most of this information and to simply have patience.

Every new golfer can find hundreds of suggestions, tips and ideas to improve their skills. It is easy for the new golfer to be overcome with all of this information. But there are really only a few basic things you should be aware of that will let you enjoy the game. By following these few basic rules, you will not only have more fun, but you will become a better player. You'll find that you will actually look forward to heading for the course.

When it comes right down to it, it's the mental mistakes that are most commonly made by the beginner golfer. Most beginners, when they start playing the game, find themselves in over their heads. It is not too long before that expensive set of golf clubs and bag and all of the other accessories that a new golfer feels they need are sitting in a corner of the garage, gathering dust.

Practice Some "Stick-to-it-iveness"

As with most things in life that require learning some new skills, sticking with golf, in spite of the numerous obstacles that rear their ugly heads, is the only way you will learn to become a better golfer. Golf is different from other sports, because your sense of accomplishment and the gratification that comes with that does not come sooner, but rather, it comes later. In order to develop the motor skills necessary to become skilled enough to make those great shots, you will find yourself spending a lot of time playing at golf before that happens.

You would think it would be fairly simple to hit the ball with a club. However, once you find yourself actually on the course and playing the holes, you'll realize how surprisingly difficult that can be.

A contributing factor to this difficulty is the fact that so many of us don't start playing golf until we've reached adulthood. As much as we might not like to hear this, it is then that we have lost some of the learning skills that are so much better when we are young. Our bodies and our minds just don't work the way they did when we were kids. Our muscles and nerves take much longer to "learn" to become coordinated enough to make that great golf shot. One way to overcome these problems is to continually practice and play. We need to tell ourselves (and listen to ourselves) that we will stick to this game, no matter what, until we become better golfers.

Patience Is A Virtue and A Necessity

When describing the game of golf, that is probably the most important thing to keep in mind. If you are not a patient person, you will have to quickly learn to change this.

Keep in mind it may take a few years before you start to master this wonderful, frustrating, fulfilling game of golf. Before you begin to make any significant headway in the game, you must be aware that several aspects of the game are going to take time before you become skilled. If there is no patience, beginner golfers will soon become extremely frustrated. When this happens you can almost see those clubs heading for that forgotten corner of the garage.

How Difficult Can It Be?

Golf is not as simple as hitting the ball repeatedly until it falls into the hole. There are a variety of skills and plays that beginner golfers must learn. To learn how to play the woods and the long irons of the "long game", consider that this takes a great deal of strength and timing. The short irons of the "short game" require good eye-hand coordination and precision motor skills. The putting game not only requires the ability to "aim" the ball but also demands skills in "reading" the hills and valleys of the greens. And we can't forget the various hazards that you'll find on almost every hole that make the game interesting. Learning how to avoid these hazards (or how to play them if you don't) is another necessary set of skills that must be developed.

While it is true that you can read about and practice hundreds of tips, you will find that one of the best ways to become a better player is to develop patience, patience, patience. In addition, it is your ability to stay with the game, to understand that developing your skills at a slow pace are essential to help you reach the point where you can enjoy this wonderful game we call golf. Keep in mind that the only person you need to compete with is yourself. If you continually improve your skills and have the patience to do so, you will enjoy this great game for many years to come.
