London on a Shoestring: Spend Next to Nothing for a Day Out
When in London, you can pack plenty of activity into a sunny spring day in Hyde Park for under £10. Here's what to do on a shoestring budget.
Museum Fatigue
Many of London's 300 museums do not charge admission. Check out the Rosetta Stone and the Egyptian mummies collection at the British Museum, take your fill of Turner at the Tate, get up close and personal with Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" at the National Gallery. Tear away from Harrods to walk up the street in South Kensington to the Victoria amp; Albert Museum of decorative arts and design; explore the Science Museum for interactive fun with rockets, trains, planes, and a simulated earthquake to fascinate the kids; see the dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum with its new Darwin Wing. Then, there's the Tate Modern, Wallace Collection, Sir John Soane's Museum, and so many more on the free list. There will be a fee for entering temporary special exhibitions within the museums.
Delight the Kids
When museum fatigue sets in, head for Hyde Park and adjacent Kensington Gardens; they are separated by the Serpentine, where you can splurge on a rowboat for hire (£8 for 30 minutes). On the Kensington Gardens side, there is the controversial Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial, an outdoor landscaped fountain. It is located alongside the free children's playground, also dedicated to Diana, for which the centerpiece is a giant wooden pirate's ship built for climbing. Right nearby, one can see Kensington Palace, her former home. Then just follow the signs for the Peter Pan Statue, which stands by the Long Water in a spot especially chosen by JM Barrie, the author.
Royal Connections
Heading toward Hyde Park is Queen Victoria's homage to her beloved husband, Prince Albert, who died half a lifetime before her at age 42. The Albert Memorial took 10 years to build and cost a small fortune, paid by public subscriptions. The entire monument was restored and re-gilded recently, so that it now shines brilliantly and is marvelously illuminated at night. Queen Elizabeth Gates, honoring the Queen Mother, opened in 1993 and are found at Hyde Park Corner facing the Wellington Arch. Not a royal connection, but many visitors like to see Speaker's Corner, at the northern end of Hyde Park near Marble Arch.
Sunny Days
After exploring some of the 650 acres of park, you may fancy a break upon a green and white striped lawn chair, perhaps to observe children sailing their toy boats among the swans and ducks at Round Pond, a favorite pastime of Londoners since 1726. Relax for an hour for £1.50. Or, use the grass where signs do not prevent it. There are plenty of benches, too, all free.
If the weather is fine, why not grab a packed lunch at Pret-à-Manger, Boots, or Marks amp; Spencer and take it into the park? Cafés, refreshment stands, and restrooms with facilities for the disabled and baby-changing facilities are found are in the museums and in the parks; some are charming and the V A;'s are superb. There is also a free electronic buggy for those needing transport within the park.
