Swine Flu Grips Texas: 1 Lewisivlle ISD School Suspends Class and UIL Postpones State Academic Meet
UIL suspends all competition after Texas State Health Services recommendation until May 11. Lewisville ISD's Hebron Valley Elementary is 73rd public school to close in Texas since Swine Flu arrived.
After consulting the Texas Education Agency, which this week is administering the statewide TAKS test to public school students, and hearing recommendations from the Commissioner of the Texas State Health Services, UIL announced the suspension of all interscholastic competition until May 11. UIL coordinates nearly all primary and secondary school competitions and groups in Texas, from football to band to debate. The decision leaves in question the possibility that the State Academic Competition, previously scheduled for this weekend in Austin, may be cancelled as the Swine Flu spreads and shows no signs of receding in the next two weeks.
At the same time, a child from Brownsville became the first U.S. fatality from the disease, which has killed hundreds and infected thousands in Mexico. As of 29 April, the CDC had confirmed 91 Swine Flu cases in 10 states, and dozens more from around the nation are currently being tested.
Following is a list of public school closures announced:
Richardson ISD (Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington area): Canyon Creek Elementary School is scheduled to reopen no earlier than Monday, 4 May.
Lewisiville ISD (Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington area): Hebron Valley Elementary is scheduled to reopen Thursday, 7 May.
Cleburne ISD (Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington area): All 11 schools are scheduled to reopen no earlier than Monday, 4 May.
Rio Grande City CISD (Rio Grande City-Roma area): All 13 schools are scheduled to reopen no earlier than Monday, 4 May.
Comal ISD (San Antonio area): All 22 schools are scheduled to reopen no earlier than Monday, 11 May.
Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD (San Antonio area): All 14 schools are scheduled to reopen no earlier than Monday, 4 May.
New Braunfels ISD (San Antonio area): All 11 schools are scheduled to reopen no earlier than Monday, 11 May.
In addition, all private schools in New Braunfels are closed until at least Monday, 11 May.
